everyone I know switched to Yahoo messenger about 12 years ago, except for people I know from NC, they stuck with AIM for some reason. Now hardly anyone uses either anymore.

claiming aim vs yahoo chat vs gchat vs facebook chat where one is 'better' than the other is nonsensical. All that matters is where the people are that you want to talk to, and more than likely they are going to be spread out among all of the services.

they are all essentially the same, and it doesn't make any sense to use the native chat client for a given service. you should be using pidgin or adium or some other chat client aggregator.

That said, I'm logged into aim, gchat, webex connect, and facebook chat via Adium, and if i'm talking to someone I generally have no idea which service is being used. It's one big buddy list, and the underlying service is invisible to me (the exception being that if i'm talking to a coworker, i know it's via webex connect).

24/196 Online. But of course half of those are through a phone. When I put Win7 on my PC this Christmas, I decided to take off AIM. I just used AIM Express and looked at the Me thing. Holy shit, supposedly I'm on 550 buddy lists. Damn.

In high school and college I'd go through my buddy list and delete people that didn't talk to me, or that I didn't talk to, in that past month.
