real or just further evidence of the pussification of America's youth?

it seems that everybody thinks they're allergic to something these days.

i think a lot of people just misuse the word allergic. they really just have sensitivities.

that said, i am allergic to bananas, kiwi, strawberry, watermelon, honey dew, cantaloupe, tomatoes...any fruit with small seeds (or small relative to its size, like the melons). this doesn't stop me from eating them, except for watermelon and honey dew. of course, i don't like those 2 and i still eat the others regularly, so it's probably just that i don't eat them as often.

food allergies are real.

the reason most developed countries have them is because our IgE (and mast cells/esinophils) are normally used to get rid of worms and parasites.
since we don't really have those, that portion of the immune system has "nothing to do". (lack of better term)
so it develops allergies towards things that are recognized as foreign but not dangerous.

we are in the middle of learning this shit right now

I'm allergic to something in Bud Light. I can have three of them and have a splitting headache the next day. I have several friends that have the same problem. Maybe some preservative?

There are children who are genuinely allergic to types of foods, but some just have intolerances which I think are different. For instance, a dairy allergy vs. Lactose intolerance. But I could be wrong. Joie?

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/alcohol-intolerance/DS01172
Quote :
"Alcohol intolerance can cause immediate, unpleasant reactions after you consume alcohol. The most common symptoms caused by alcohol intolerance include nasal congestion and flushing skin. This condition is sometimes inaccurately referred to as an alcohol allergy. Alcohol intolerance is caused by a genetic condition in which the body is unable to break down alcohol. The only way to prevent alcohol intolerance is to avoid alcohol altogether.

Alcohol intolerance occurs when your body doesn't have the proper enzymes to break down (metabolize) the toxins in alcohol. This is caused by inherited (genetic) traits.

Intolerance reactions can also be caused by a number of other ingredients commonly found in alcoholic beverages, especially in beer or wine. These include:

* Sulfur dioxide or other preservatives
* Chemicals, grains or other ingredients
* Histamine, a byproduct of fermentation or brewing

In some cases, reactions can be triggered by an allergy to a grain such as corn, wheat or rye or to another substance contained in alcoholic beverages.

Rarely, severe pain after drinking alcohol is a sign of a more serious underlying disorder, such as Hodgkin's lymphoma (Hodgkin's disease).

Risk factors for alcohol intolerance or other reactions to alcoholic beverages include:

* Being of Asian descent. A large percentage of people of Asian descent have flushing and other intolerance symptoms after drinking alcohol, even in very small amounts.
* Having an allergy to grains or another food allergy.
* Having Hodgkin's lymphoma.
* Taking certain antibiotic or antifungal medications.
* Taking disulfiram (Antabuse) for alcohol abuse or alcohol dependence. When you drink, disulfiram can cause reactions that include flushing, racing heartbeat, nausea and vomiting."

I know some people have gastrointestinal issues, esp with dairy and wheat products, so parents will limit or cut those out of the child's diet. But also with all this crap about organic and natural foods parents are going crazy trying to find an alternative to everything, when in my opinion that's a bit unnecessary

Am I allergic to carrots?

Whenever I eat large carrots, I start to sneeze as I'm chewing them up and I end up shooting bits of carrot all over the place. Usually 1-2 sneezes only and I'm able to chomp down 2-3 large carrots, seems to happen more often than not.

In my time working in restaurant kitchens, I have heard it all when it comes to allergies. Actually had someone try to say that they were allergic to SALT.

Is that shit even possible? Maybe a sensitivity to iodine? But that shit is essential to life as well.

I drank a half gallon of milk (whole milk) last thursday before going to a friends house. I woke up in the middle of the night (2:30AM to be exact). I dont know if that counts as an allergy but all I can remember hearing as I left was "dont mess up your pretty car". It was not one of my finer moments but was one of the more memorable.

I've heard the increase of food allergies can be tied to children living on antibiotics when they are younger. They have parents that go to the doctor for every cold they have and doctors that will write a script for antibiotics any chance they get.

Because their immune system isn't forced to fight off actually bad things it ends up fighting off things that aren't bad.

I've also heard what Joie said...I heard that allergies are ways to fight off the parasites that people in other 3rd world countries have, but since we don't have them here are immune system fights other things.

So I guess both things are true.

That being sad...this past summer when we should have campers come with gallon sized bags of medicines and paragraphs of allergies they had I felt so bad for them. We had twins come in that had to have their mom bring them every meal because they were allergic to just about everything.

I know that when I have kids I will not be living at the doctors office.

But allergies are not a myth...I've had to stab a kid with an epi pen after they were stung by a bee...it's not fun

I don't know much about food allergies but this makes perfect sense. Whatever protein in the carrot that you're sensitive to is denatured during cooking.

Apparently now parents are advised to withhold certain foods, like cow milk, oranges, peanuts, etc. from kids until they reach various ages because if they are exposed to them too young they're more likely to develop allergies. I had never heard of that until my sister-in-law was listing the things my niece couldn't eat yet.

Was that recommended even like 10 years ago? I'd be interested to see how much data backs it up.

90% of the time nut allergies are from lack of proper exposure and can be overcome with minor supervision and a epipen or 3

i do think that some major allergic reactions happen but the % has ballooned in the last 10 years to ridiculous levels.....

imho you learn to deal with your body by handling your shit, not forcing everyone around you to be sensitive to your needs

While I agree with you in the sense that it's not right to make everyone around you suffer because you're allergic to something...there are people that have such severe allergies that they can die if they just breath the dust off something, or if someone touches a peanut and then touches them.
I'm sure no one wants to be the person that causes someone's death by sending PB&J in your kids lunch box even after the teacher sends home a note saying that a child in that classroom has a peanut allergy and if you could please leave peanut butter at home.

^^That's why there are theories that increased antibiotic use on young children is leading to the increase of food allergies.

I had dinner with my dad last weekend at Crazy Fire Mongolian Grill. We were almost done, when this guy comes up to us and says "Hey, did ya'll have seafood? Cuz our food was right next to yours on the grill, and ya'll must have had seafood cuz my eyes are itching and I'm having a reaction."

We didn't have seafood.

I was like, "Dude, you came to a place like this with a food allergy? You deserve itchy eyes. Get up out my face."

My face swells up when I drink Fresca. I turn into the Elephant man. First time it happened, I called it a fluke. When it happened after a second try, I consider it an allergy. :-(
