it's fun...my parents have about 10 hives...my first one last year didn't do so well, but this year's seems pretty strong...i just put them in on tuesday and when i went in at lunch to remove the queen cage (well, to make sure she was out of it), i saw that the bees already had half a frame filled with comb, which is awesomegonuts

i'll probably pick up another super or some more medium this weekend when i'm home for easter

i think so...i have blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, and apple trees (not to mention my flowers) and you usually see a higher output when you've got a hive nearby...last year's hive flew off (which i should have expected since it was pretty weak to begin with), but since i have a baseline of production with my current plants, i should see an increase this season

the honey is my favorite part, of course...i really enjoy making honey wines (aka, mead), but mine are usually melomels (honey and fruit) with high alcohol content (15-17%) and significant carbonation (think something almost as bubbly as champagne)...and i almost never use sugar since i always have honey

even then, it's just fun to have...they're almost like pets

it CAN be expensive, but it doesn't have to be...i've built all of my hives myself (well, using my dad's tools because i don't have most of them), which, even after buying the framing materials and beeswax-coated foundations (which isn't necessary, but is my personal preference), usually comes out to be about $15/hive for a super and a medium (no queen excluder, though)

colonies with a queen can range, but are generally about $70 from a quality farm...you can, however, oftentimes find local beekeepers that have nabbed a wild swarm or had one of their hives split and swarm (which happens when they raise a second queen) who will sell it to you for cheap...OR you can nab your own swarm (most local beekeepers are on the call list for when someone reports a swarm and if they have the space, they'll take the new colony themselves...but in a lot of cases, they DON'T have space and they'll let you know when they find out so you can get it yourself)

the rest of the equipment is generally unnecessary...at least, the "professional" version is...for example, i paid a whopping $2 to walmart for a mosquito net that goes on your head (found in the camping section)...that's much cheaper than a "real" bee hat and as long as you have a hat to go underneath, it's the same thing...aside from that, long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and some gloves are all you "need"
