So, I was giving away an old TV stand that had glass shelves. The guy came to pick it up this morning.



I took the shelves out and he was putting the stand in his vehicle, and I was holding one glass shelf in each hand. I was holding one in each hand where they were long end up, and my hand was positioned where I was holding one in each hand with a pinch-like grip. So there was possibly a lot of pressure being applied by my thumb in a small area.

Anyway, I'm standing by his vehicle, and i hear a loud pop, and the glass shelf in my right hand just shatters, and the other one immediately shattered as well leaving me holding two handfuls of shattered safety glass. My first instinct was to tackle the guy and yell GET DOWN. I was certain there was a sniper taking shots at us (albeit one that had really bad glaucoma or some shit).

Then I realized that this was not likely, and the glass just spontaneously shattered. But I don't understand why. Was it the temperature difference between inside and outside? It wasn't terribly cold outside, but there was probably a good 20 degree difference. I don't know much about tempered glass, so plz explain this weird phenomenon.

on a similar note i have broken TWO pyrex baking dishes from gettting them too hot. >.<

Your hand would have made the difference even more significant, but I don't think that's enough temperature difference to do it. If you had a stereo receiver or PS3 sitting in this cabinet at any time, the temperature difference would have been more extreme.

I'm guessing you were just putting more pressure on the panes than you realized, and when the first pane broke your immediate reaction was to grip the second pane even tighter, breaking it too.

highly unlikely, as the thermal expansion coefficient of safety glass isn't high enough to be affected by temperature changes less than ~200 degrees
