What does "top" or "best" guitarist even mean?

Is that most technically proficient at guitar? If so, Jimi Hendrix is not that guy. I wouldn't even know who that is, but I'd bet only a few people would even know his/her name, since he/she would most likely be a classical guitarist. But even then, there's no objective way to measure this, so at a certain level it becomes impossible to distinguish.

Does top guitarist mean most popular? best selling? most recognized riffs? most influential to other guitarists?

Top and best are such goddamn nebulous terms when referring to art that you're a fool to use that as a basis for distinction, especially when coupled with 'ever.'

You could at least make the argument with sports and other activities that have objective metrics, but even then it's a basis for debate, rather than conclusive.
