Fun Dip was one of my first hustles.

Back in the 10th grade I got my first car. It was a 1987 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme passed down from my mother. It was a sweet ride. 2-door, wire wheels, black with a red pinstripe and a burgundy interior. I added a CB Radio with a PA feature, a purple TV, and a Panasonic tape deck that I picked up for the low low price of twenty bucks. The only problem was that it drank gas. I was lucky to get 10 MPG the way I drove her.

It just so happened that I got a food allowance of $15 every week from my dad. $3 a day to buy lunch at school. Unfortunately, I noticed a pattern of spending $15 on gas every Monday and then not eating lunch for the rest of the week. I'd say it took less than three weeks before I put this shit to a rest.

It started out small. I went to the gas station armed with $5 left over after putting $10 in my car. I grabbed a few packs of Fun Dip, Starburst, Skittles, and a handful of Now-and-Laters. I headed back to school and started slinging my wares. To my surprise, the rarely seen candies sold quick whereas the run-of-the-mill stuff that everybody was used to was hard to offload. Armed with this knowledge I took my profits from Day 1 and re-invested in Fun Dip and Now-and-Laters.

I found that I could quickly turn my $15 gas allowance into ~$50 per week by slinging candy in class. I'd estimate that ~80% of the profit was from Fun Dip, whereas the other ~20% was through the other miscellaneous candies that I brought back with me.

This hustle went on until I spring hit and I became busy cutting grass again. I averaged around $20 an hour through my grass cutting business which negated my need for quick cash in class and put me out of the candy business.

Now $50 per week seems trivial, but at the time it was a big deal. That $50 was just enough to keep me from getting some shitty part time job that I would inevitably hate. It kept gas in my car, allowed me to eat lunch every day, and let me have a little fun on the weekend that I wouldn't have been able to afford otherwise.
