If a close friend offered to lend you money (unsolicited) say for a large toy or vacation or some other similar unnecessary big ticket purchase, would you take it? If so, how much would you accept?

My gut says walk away from it, but its damned tempting.

So how exactly does a conversation like that go?

"Hey man you feel like going on vacation or buying a TV? I'll lend you some money br0!"

What is he fucking bored or laundering money or something?

We've been planning a motorcycle trip from some time, except some things came up over the winter and now i likely won't have money for motorcycle until the fall. We were talking about it and he straight up asked "why don't I just lend you the money for a bike".

He makes more than twice my salary, if that makes a difference.

definitely no

for one thing, have some self respect.

second, it will change the relationship. he will have the upper hand. you will quite literally owe him something.

How much do you value the friendship?

Small amounts of money (for emergencies, etc.) are one thing, but being fronted a motorcycle? I'd say no.

I mean... think about it. You'd be riding bitch the whole goddamned road trip. No one else would know it, but you would and he would.

+1

At the same time... I "spoil" some of my close friends. I have no issues lending money/spottin' them here and there... Granted, I have 100% trust in them and I know that they are okay financially... There is a limit though and it's definitely not more than 3 digits...

you people need to read the context

think about it

if it's time pressed and they're good friends and the guy's good for it

than yeah... just pay him back

^well, when you put it that way...

In all seriousness, I'd already made up my mind not to do it and immediately told him that I wouldn't feel comfortable doing so when he brought it up.

I just wanted to start a thread on it to have something to talk about.

If i wanted to go on a motorcycle trip, and my good friend was going to go with me, but didn't have the money, i'd lend it to him with no weird feelings.

It depends on the friendship, but if you know you're going to pay him back, and you know he won't be weird about it, i'd say just take it.

do you think backing out of the planned trip or owing money will be worse for the friendship?

we've been good friends for 10+ years and I'd definitely pay him back, if I were to take it (which I'm not). My thing is I would hate for something else to come up in the mean time and him in a position to where he needed the cash and i still couldn't come up with it at the spur of the moment.

I really wanted to do the trip this spring, but I'm old enough for my wants not to hurt me.

This is only a good idea if you are extremely financially responsible.

one of my best friends and I have an agreement that we will get the other's back if the yearly trip comes around and things aren't going so hot. he's taken care of me a couple of times and i've taken care of him a couple. Not a big deal or a whole lot of money (>$200), but definitely not a motorcycle...

And on that note, I would also never lend money to a friend.

I lent a couple of friends $200 (and some music which I didn't have copies of) and they never paid me back. In fact, when I asked for it, they ended the friendship (and sent me a threatening email as well). Shows how much they needed/wanted my friendship.

Fucking assholes... I hope they die.

I lent someone at work money...a small amount, but still.....well, he never paid me back. He asked me one or two times for some money for this or that, usually a office event and I would remind him about when I did that before.....that ends the conversation.

if you can't afford to pay up front, you don't need it.

what if something happens in your life before the fall that ruins you financially?

Lawsuit, medical bills, car accident, etc....

you NEVER know

the most money that I'll let myself owe a friend is just enough to cover a dinner one night, only to get him back within a couple days

I would loan any of my close friends anything they needed to be honest. It would be a little harder to do for a joy item (motorbike) but given your circumstances/story I'm sure I would. Money has never destroyed a friendship/relationship of mine. Lets hope it stays that way!

Goooooooooood luck!

Heck yea, without a doubt.

If we were planning a little trip and he came into hard times (needed to repair car or who knows) I'd definitely make the offer. And I likely wouldn't let him refuse. If it's my best freaking friend I know dang sure he's good for it. Who wouldn't do this...?

However, if we're talking like the full cost of a motorcycle (~$10K+) that'd be a little different. If I was totally out of debt and had it yes. Still paying something off? It's going toward that.
