ACTUALLY....they think now that he did it on purpose

The way some of the cannons and the anchor were found it looks like he accidently ran it aground on purpose. His crew was pretty big and he basically just took all the loot off the Queen Anne's Revenge and loaded it onto a smaller ship and sailed off with a smaller crew. More booty for him.
