is it a Canadian thing to put on hazards when it's raining or something? Seems like anytime it rains I see only Canadians with hazard lights flashing.

i've done it when it was raining so bad everyone was only doing 40 on the interstate, i wanted to make sure i was as visible as possible since i was going so slow. i'll also flip them on if i get stuck behind someone traveling considerably below the speed of the flow of traffic

Yeah, that is a problem.

More cars need day-running lights. Not because it helps with visibility during the day (it doesn't), but because dumb asses don't always turn their lights on when it rains.

I do enjoy my running lights.

I know that I would probably be one of those people that would forget to turn on my lights. Only because I would always think to turn on my lights when my wipers are on, but with rain-x on my windshield I don't use them that often so I wouldn't even think about it.

Frankly, I'm not sure if day-time running lights are a solution. Only your front lights turn on, not your rear lights. I'm way more concerned about running to the back of a car in my lane, than running into the front of a car in the oncoming lane. I think some people are less likely to turn on their lights BECAUSE they know they have day-time running lights.

Well, isn't the law if you're running your windshield wipers you have to turn on your lights? So if I don't have my wipers on I don't have to have my lights on.

Well when I had my caddy the lights were automatically turn on when I turned on the wipers.

When I went to the buick I had to get back into the habit of turning my lights on when it started to rain.

My car now has running lights and automatic lights when it gets dark. If I ever drive someone else's car I have to be reminded to turn on the lights.

I know it's not the law to put hazards on when you are driving. I just wanted to know if any particular place it is the law, especially in Canada because I've noticed a lot of Canadians around here with hazards on when it rains.

there's a switch. look in your owner's manual.

on topic though, when it's a torrential downpour and visibility is limited i always have my hazard lights flashing. The last thing I want is someone to come up behind me and rear end me at full speed and it's come close to happening once or twice. I usually only do this on the highway. Normal roads and normal rain showers i usually just turn my headlights on.

I love how automakers have equipped cars with lights that are always on, as well as spent a lot of money on R&D for automatic headlights...all b/c people are too stupid and/or lazy to recognize when a situation calls for headlight/taillight usage. Things like this make me weep for humanity.

Personally I can't stand DRLs, especially the ones that are just the highbeams (some Toyotas, Saturns come to mind). Luckily it is something that is easy to disable on any automobile.

As far as hazard lights, I use mine in the following situations:
-if I'm pulled over on the side of the road (specifically, shoulder on a highway)
-if caught in a sudden downpour of rain and I am driving well below the speed limit
-if coming around a bend or over a ridge on a highway and see that I have to stop or slow down suddenly (using the hazards in this situation alerts people behind you to a potentially dangerous situation that they themselves cannot yet see). Since my car can stop better than 95% of the vehicles on the road I'm especially mindful of this last one
