worlds 50 most pretentious restaurants.
4/28/2010 12:34:01 PM
I have never heard of any of them.
4/28/2010 12:36:05 PM
Pretentious must = You cant afford it, and dont have the palate to appreciate any of it. Which is totally cool. Thats why theres places like Olive Garden and Applebees.^Ive hard of about half of them, almost all of the american ones, and have eaten at a few. The food each time was fucking mind blowing. And some of them werent as expensive as you'd might think. [Edited on April 28, 2010 at 12:39 PM. Reason : ]

I can appreciate the difference between Outback and Morton'sBut I don't think my palate is refined enough to appreciate the difference between Morton's and some of these placesSo while I'd love to try some of them out, just for the experience, I'm not sure it would be worth it to try more than a handful of them at this point[Edited on April 28, 2010 at 12:59 PM. Thats not pretentious. You wouldnt be paying god knows how much for a pbj. You'd be paying god knows how much for it as part of a 15-25 course tasting meal that delivers more flavor in a single bite than anything you've ever eaten. Its expensive, of course. Its insanely labor intenseive, and requires a serious degree of skill and precision. Its also not the kind of place for those who think Golden Corral is a fine meal because you can eat all you want. Pretentious is a place like...Solas. Mediocre at best food, at a high price because its "the place to be seen". That shit is a joke.
4/28/2010 1:02:51 PM
^What do you do again?

Where are you a chef at?
4/28/2010 1:09:35 PM
not a single resto in canada on the list... sounds about right. i NEVER eat out up here because the food is ubiquitously terrible and overpriced. theres *one* restaurant i like because they have grilled octopus that is divine, but I've only been to it once this year so far.
4/28/2010 1:11:42 PM
Momofuku Ssäm BarI'm sorry but that's just funny.
4/28/2010 1:31:09 PM
Nice to see Uncle Yammy's Rib Shack of Greenville on the list at #20

I don't think tarun knows what a tasting menu is
4/28/2010 2:04:51 PM
plz 2 explain[Edited on April 28, 2010 at 2:10 PM. Reason : i seriously dunno what tasting menu is]isnt it like a buffet but in limited quantity...no 2nd serving thingie?[Edited on April 28, 2010 at 2:11 PM. Reason : ..]
4/28/2010 2:09:54 PM
they just bring you a series of very small plates- no more than a bite or two of each dish. ive seen up to 35 things on a tasting menu but thats a biiiit much for most people i think
4/28/2010 2:12:43 PM
Its a menu that has a little flavored adhesive next to each listed entree than you can lick and get a taste of the food before you order, so you won't be ordering blind
4/28/2010 2:12:59 PM
$150 for tasting menu seems very expensive i dunno^i would love to visit slave's fantasy world someday[Edited on April 28, 2010 at 2:15 PM. Reason : sounds like a cool place to be]
4/28/2010 2:13:31 PM
Thats probably because you're poor and treat TGI Fridays as a destination restaurant.
4/28/2010 2:14:45 PM
it is expensive but there are super premium ingredients, elaborate cooking techniques and weird food technology used in some of these restaurants. I'm just pointing out things that increase the price besides ambiance, popularity and notoriety of the chef.
4/28/2010 2:15:58 PM
A tasting menu is like a sampler platter that takes longer.
4/28/2010 2:15:59 PM
i am not black i am brown. i am poor but i dont go to TGIF i would rather eat at home[Edited on April 28, 2010 at 2:19 PM. Reason : i get the point greenjay but i still thought 150-200 per person is expensive]
4/28/2010 2:16:59 PM
thats the caliber of restaurants i try to avoid entirely. fast food has its occasional advantage when you are travelling or its very late, pizza pretty similar i guess. But paying 15 bucks a meal for the same thing that comes from the freezer section at walmart? no thanks. I also dislike paying fine dining prices for stuff i can make better at home. Being a home chef has spoiled me entirely for restaurants.
4/28/2010 2:22:06 PM
oh snap, i've eaten at both of these:
