take a sheet of paper and divide it into different boxes. if you want something more make it bigger. make it the bottom of a plastic box. drop a bouncy ball inside, cover the top and shake for 1-5 seconds. put it on a level surface immediately after you finish shaking, and whatever it lands on is your career.

foolproof method son

I like sales because sometimes I make way more money, but then sometimes my income drops to complete shit. It is a constant roller coaster, makes it hard to budget and plan for the future.

When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time on BBS's trying to download porn. back then kids were still hiding playboy and penthouse magazines under their mattresses, but I realized that by keeping porn on our computer, my parents who knew nothing about computers would never find it, and it was easier to acquire.

however, downloading the binaries from newsgroups and converting it into a usable format wasn't very easy back then, and I learned a lot, just by trying to get my porn fix as a 12 year old, which led me to dabble in programming, which led to me choosing to major in computer science in college. Being pretty well versed with the Internet in the early 90's, it was obvious to me that there would be a lot of money in computers/technology so I went that route, and ultimately ended up in networking. True Story.

Cliffs Notes: Downloading porn in the early 90's got me to where I am today.

try a few things out first

you'll never know what you like if you don't find things you dislike first

never stay with a career after you've learned everything you need to know about it. if it takes a weekend then quit after that weekend. 2 months, then two months. 20 years, then stay 20 years

honestly, I picked accounting mostly because of job security/opportunity. salaries are good and hours are pretty good too, except for tax season of course, but the rest of the year is pretty chill

I could never see myself in a career where finding a good job is tough and/or you're always teetering on the edge of layoffs

I fucked around with 2-3 majors I wasn't really passionate about, and did old Math Contest problems in my spare time

eventually it hit me (I remember the exact moment/location) "Hey, why don't I major in math?"

now, though I barely make enough for basic necessities, beer and cigarettes, I get to really work my brain and do things that are challenging, interesting and satisfying

and when I get my doctorate I will hopefully start making respectable amounts of money

so I guess my answer is, "Do something you're passionate about"

The problem is that a lot of people don’t grow up to be passionate about anything except sitting around watching sports on TV and playing video games.

For that kind of person, they’ll may never find a career that they like, instead only having a job that pays the bills.

when i took the ASVAB in high school it told me i could either be an engineer or a scientist. i was all like "why would i want to drive a train" so i went into physics. but i also liked computers and since i realized i'd have a better chance getting a job programming than doing astronomical physics, i went that route. with a 6 year detour in selling textbooks in between

if it pays enough that they can sit around watching sports and playing video games the rest of the time, wouldn't that count as success?

[Edited on May 3, 2010 at 8:29 PM. Reason : when i took the asvab, they thought i was cheating...true story]

i'm passionate about fishing and that's about it. it'd be pretty difficult for me to make the kind of money fishing that i'm gonna make as an engineer, if i could make any money at it at all. what i'm trying to say is that advice just doesn't work for most folks.

I agree with the passionate statement but I do agree it's not for everyone... However, I can't fathom putting so much time and energy into something that bores you or you're just meh about.

i'd rather be poor and have fun

you can't take it with you and all that jazz

but i'm not gonna fault someone for doing what it takes to secure a certain lifestyle

different strokes etc.
