they say that the boat should have just rammed the iceberg straight-up, as that would have only flooded two of their compartments instead of 5 (4 being the limit). of course jack and rose would have died, along with anyone else chilling (literally) near the bow but would have kept the boat afloat.

considering how preventable this would have been modern day, what with the improvement in steel and general knowledge of physics, it's interesting to look back on how wrong (or "right", I guess) the conventional wisdom was about things.

It didn't only carry mail. But carrying mail was an important role for ocean liners because of the frequency of their transatlantic crossings.

the Mail Boat to Tangier Island that still runs today is a lot more than a mail boat. It serves as a passenger ferry and supplies the general store with milk and bread.
