...Is bubbling up in 1 of many plumes from this oil spill.Holy fuck! This is gunna kill everything!http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/16/us/16oil.html?hp

goodbye sea turtle friends[Edited on May 15, 2010 at 11:05 PM. Reason : go enjoy the beach this summer while you can]
5/15/2010 11:05:00 PM
So much for my interest in making a summer trip down to the Texas gulf coast. No Corpus Christi or Galveston trips for me. I miss the Outer Banks.

5/15/2010 11:06:14 PM
Even if you cut the density to half oil/half water, thats still 22.35 Billion barrels of oil. AND there are MULTIPLE PLUMES!
5/15/2010 11:10:48 PM
even if you cut the oil/water ratio to 1/100its still over 400 million gallons of oilThe Exxon Valdez spill was 11 million gallonsgoodnight, sweet princes of aquatic life---hold up. OP did you mean 45 billion gallons of oil?? 45 billion barrels is 1.89 trillion gallons[Edited on May 15, 2010 at 11:28 PM. Reason : UNITS SON]
5/15/2010 11:25:53 PM
No its all in cubic feet. It's .13368 cf/gal so units are ok.Also its 42 gallons per barrel of oilSo yeah, its 1.89 trillion gallions[Edited on May 15, 2010 at 11:48 PM. Reason : blah]

A bitchin' time to drive a hybrid/electric car.
5/15/2010 11:54:33 PM
And a fantastic time to be close enough to bike to work.
5/15/2010 11:56:49 PM
What a waste. Sure hope they're drilling more to replace it.
5/15/2010 11:57:47 PM
The Gulf was already a giant dead zone. But this better not fuck with the NC coast
5/16/2010 12:02:13 AM
Calm down, merbig.
5/16/2010 12:03:54 AM
I'M NOT GOING TO CALM DOWN. THIS IS SERIOUS FUCKING BUSINESS UP IN HERE!
5/16/2010 12:04:31 AM
Move to the Lounge or the Soapbox?
5/16/2010 12:06:57 AM
Actually, this part about additional oil plumes is a new development, so it is, in fact [new].
5/16/2010 12:07:14 AM
^ But the entire thing is [old]. A few new plumes don't really mean shit. We're fucked as it is.
5/16/2010 12:09:56 AM
*shrug* it's a fair topic for conversation, Chit Chat or otherwise. game on.
5/16/2010 12:12:44 AM
^^BLANKET GENERALIZATIONS ITT
5/16/2010 12:15:42 AM
I mean im no environmentalist, but this is an outrageous amount of pollutant in the gulf. This has long term fail written all over it.
5/16/2010 12:17:03 AM
^^^ Well almost anything goes in Chit Chat. I just want the dude to make it point. He did all that math and said nothing about it.^^ I HAPPEN TO LIKE BLANKETS, SO FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [Edited on May 16, 2010 at 12:17 AM. Reason : .]
5/16/2010 12:17:12 AM
My point is there is a lot of oil in the gulf and I am shocked at how much is there. I mean I thought it was Exxon Valdez style, but it is much worse. It could have long term impacts on how our fishing industry operates.
5/16/2010 12:47:45 AM
Dude, you don't need to explain yourself to master troll.
5/16/2010 12:51:15 AM
this spill will stop the gulf stream and literally cause those superhurricanes from day after tomorrow.
5/16/2010 1:03:31 AM
Can't possibly be that much, or even close to that much. You are talking about 2 billion barrels a day flowing out of the hole. While the BP estimate of 5,000 barrels/day seems like it is bunk, the highest independent number I've seen is about 100,000 barrels a day, with the consensus averaging about 40-50,000 barrels a day. We're talking 2, 3 million barrels tops from this spill at this point - probably closer to 1 million.
5/16/2010 1:18:11 AM
somebody needs to drink that motherfucker's milkshake
5/16/2010 1:22:57 AM
^^sucks at mathAlso, most of it is like almost at the bottom, 4.600 feet down (well is 5,000 feet)....it will kill some turtles, but not put lots of oil on the beaches/marshes etc....
5/16/2010 1:58:11 AM
^ Care to explain how I suck at math?Up to 10 miles long (at its longest), up to 3 miles wide (at its widest), and up 300 feet thick "in spots" does not mean that we have a 10 miles x 3 mile x 300' oil patch. Furthermore, as pointed out earlier, this is not pure oil, but some ratio of oil to water. But perhaps you can explain to me how 100,000 barrels a day x 24 days = 44,700,000,000
5/16/2010 2:13:37 AM
5/16/2010 2:19:23 AM
First I searched the link for the word billion and didn't find it.Then I saw that this guy was just doing some retarded math on vague and/or estimated numbers. If this was leaking a billion barrels a day we would know it.
5/16/2010 2:19:54 AM
i would imagine if it were 44.7 billion barrels of oil the fuel prices would be in the 5 buck range at least by now.]
5/16/2010 2:26:39 AM
Especially considering that globally the world only consumes about 85 million barrels of oil a day ...heck Saudi Arabia in total only has about 250 billion barrels in known oil reserves
5/16/2010 2:31:14 AM
5/16/2010 2:38:20 AM
I'm agreeing with Fox News. What is this world coming to
5/16/2010 2:43:41 AM
Peak Oil sounds like even more of a joke after this accident, but no one will mention that in the news.
5/16/2010 3:00:29 AM
some shitty math going on ITT
5/16/2010 10:08:48 AM
Hey now, my math doesn't belong in a toilet
5/16/2010 10:11:15 AM
agreeing with Shepard Smith is not as bad as agreeing with fox news as a whole. He seems to be relatively level headed
5/16/2010 10:36:27 AM
if it were a domestic oil company FOX's opinion would flip
5/16/2010 10:39:06 AM
we definitely need more offshore oil rigs to make up for this
5/16/2010 10:53:14 AM
I say we just sue everyone until it works itself out......that works right?
5/16/2010 10:53:50 AM
a year ago, all the crazies were convinced that we were going to run out of oil. Now we're all going to drown in it.
5/16/2010 10:59:02 AM
The oil plume must be super dilluted. The article even mentions that BP used chemical dispersants to break up the oil. There's just no way billions of gallons of oil are bubbling up.And to the guy that says the oil will stay at the bottom of the ocean, it has a lower specific gravity that sea water, so that shit's gunna float.
5/16/2010 11:21:53 AM
Its really going to suck when the next hurricane sweeps through the gulf
5/16/2010 11:30:46 AM
1 barrel of oil = 42 gallons 44.7 billion barrels of oil =1.99 trillion gallons of oil..."The government shortly afterward estimated the spill at 210,000 gallons - or 5,000 barrels - a day, a figure that has since been questioned by some scientists who fear it could be far more."where are you getting this figure of 44.7 billion barrels of oil ???This whole "gulf oil spill" situation is the perfect "crisis" for the obama administration to come in and regulate another solvent business entity into oblivion. Clean it up, move on and learn from the mistakes..USA #1[Edited on May 16, 2010 at 11:43 AM. Reason : ]
5/16/2010 11:32:48 AM
he's taking the maximum measurements of a plume and assuming that it's a perfect box. Which is absurd. The plume is 10 miles long, 3 miles wide at some point, but not all along the length of it, and at most 300 feet thick at some point, but, again, not along the length of it.
