I've been unusually fatigued for a couple of weeks. It'd be worrisome even if I weren't moving 2/3 across the country in two weeks - it's on the level of mono. I told my husband a week or two ago that I'd see a doctor for it, but didn't; I told him I'd go today, but am not because I want to wait til my regular doc is off vacation. So I have made an appointment for Wednesday.

A friend who is living with us holds some medical beliefs that I don't think are very well thought out, is very much influenced by the placebo effect, and is more than a little bit of a hypochondriac, thinks that I have vitamin B deficiency, and was urging me last night to take a B supplement, and then, when Z and I were discussing this at lunch, went and got one for me to take. I feel this info is relevant because were she not present, vitamin supplements wouldn't have entered the discussion, and due to her thought process, the anecdotal evidence she provides in support of the vitamin supplement is not applicable, IMO.

I refused.

I feel my husband got irrationally upset (like, storming out of the house and slamming the door. This is SOOOOOO unusual for him); he thinks I should have just taken the pill she offered because what could it have hurt, and because he asked me to.

I think "no good reason not to" is not a good enough reason to do so, when I've got a damn dr's visit in <48hrs. Give me something partially convincing like "because I know it works, based on X, Y, Q" or "I looked B deficiency, and I think she's onto something". I refused to take it on the grounds that I think a vast majority of vitamin supplements are unnecessary and bunch of hocus pocus placebo shenangians.

I should add: this is a "let TWW give some insight into who should be looking for a reality check in the mail" poll. We're both stubborn as hell, and neither of us is going to admit we were anything resembling "wrong" on this issue.

Take it to shut them up. Vitamin B will likely not help you at all, but it won't hurt you either. If you truly think it's a placebo, then taking it won't do a damn thing except get them off your back.

there are a million reasons why you can be feeling fatigued. Vitamin B deficiency can cause fatigue, but it may not be the reason why you are fatigued. Let the doctor decide

I say hold off on taking anything until you go to your doctor on Weds. When you do a blood test there, you'll find out what the REAL issue is. If you take supplements now then you'll throw it off.. I am curious to see if you really do have a B deficiency. Wednesday is not too far away.

Just take the fucking pill.

It's a vitamin. Chances are you're not getting enough of them anyway.

And you'd feel like a fucking buffoon if you ended up feeling better.

i would do some research on vitamin deficiencies. fwiw i went to the doctor feeling fatigued (like severely fatigued) and i had a severe vitamin D deficiency and i was really anemic.

a lot of things could cause fatigue. i mean i guess it "couldn't hurt" to take the vitamin b supplement but i'm kinda with you a) i don't like taking medicine "just cause" and b) if you're already going to the doctor within 48 hours, just wait for the doctor

ALSO because like what if you really are deficient in something and you take it and then go to the doctor and your bloodwork comes back normal bc you took it but really you do need to be on some kind of supplement. i'd just wait if you are going to the doctor already.

fwiw, "5 hour energy" is mostly just a huge dose of vitamin B

so at best, one vitamin will make you feel a little more energetic for a little while; at worst, it will have no effect

5 hour energy's main effect on me is that it makes my wallet $2 lighter

doesn't it have a shitload of caffeine in it though too?

^ i knew someone would say that. thats totally not what the problem is. the problem is that i go outside as much as a normal person and i still have a deficiency. if i go back in a few weeks and still have the deficiency on a supplement then it is an absorption problem and i'm probably not getting enough of the things you need to help absorb vit d - calcium etc.

Your husband is mad because he told you to do something, and you wouldn't?

1950's?

You shouldn't just take pills to take pills. Research on your own/ask the pharma/DOC.

i don't get why it would be laughable. i mean wouldn't it be better to get her bloodwork done without fucking it up by taking vitamins so that she doesn't get skewed results? isn't it better to know what the actual problem is (even if it is vit b) before popping pills?

I was really fatigued and had a lot of other problems going on for months... Turned out to be Vitamin D deficiency. Was told to take 1,000 units per day and it's helped a ton.

So basically... you never know, it could be a vitamin deficiency, but I don't think you should've flat out refused because I mean, what harm would it have done? Although now I'm curious too as to what your doctor will say/labs will show.
