I'm moving into the woods! We talked to a lumber company, and astonishingly enough, they let us use a few acres of land for the summer. A case study in 'it never hurts to ask.' We're going to film a wilderness cooking blog that shows how to prepare lightweight backpacking meals, how to forage and trap and general tips and tricks for living outside. Plus the absurd juxtaposition of working a corporate job while living outdoors. We're just moving in (6 nights now), everything below is just temporary until we get setup. It's so nice to wake up to the sun, wash my face in the river, drink coffee by the fire and then drive to work.

Freaking Sweet man, you'll have an awesome summer that's for sure.I'm not sure how accurate that map is though. Looks like just a tiny part of NJ is included in the bear range and black bears actually are a bit of a nuisance in most of the northern half of NJ.
6/14/2010 1:51:41 PM
i would love to be part of your crew. sounds like my kind of summer

This is like my lawyer friend who built his house by wood from trees that he cut down and cut himself. He lives in the middle of the woods.
6/14/2010 2:15:46 PM
Id love to take part in this for a few weeks as a vacation or something. But I dont think I'd want to camp out then have to go into work.
6/14/2010 2:19:36 PM
Does your lawyer friend do pro bono work for forest creatures? That's my new idea for a Brendan Frasier movie.]

-- drive to work-- use prepackaged ingredients-- use canned propane and sterno-- use utensils and cookware manufactured in third world countries.-- camping gear rom REI.-- furniture looks like it was stolen from North Dorm. There is no juxtaposition here.this is purely about some surburban entrepreneurs trying to cash in on their favorite sport of car-camping. even your Buddhist prayer flags mesh nicely with the Jolly Roger. Americans' a la carte Buddhism is a perfect fit with the overly romanticised "Pirateology" cleverly packaged for modern housewives' consumption.Arrrgh. Avast me hearties. This sammich is the root of all suffering. Shiver me timbers.

^^When you put it that way, reminds me of the "Buy an $800 backpack and trek across Europe so you can haggle with street vendors over a 50 cent hotdog"Good luck on your venture, should be an interesting read

lol @Joe. I think you've got it out for me. I hope i didn't suggest that this camping was sustainable, or that we were making some type of political statement here. Or even that I was better than anyone else for doing it. If I did, I apologize. I'm having some fun in the woods and attempting to learn a few things in the process. I also wanted to share because I think my interests align with the interests of quite a few others around here.Let me address a few of your points. -- We will be eating just like anyone else, mostly from a grocery store, but we're also going to show local edible plants and recipes you could use them in. (beyond the obvious fish, fruit and berries). We also have gardens, chickens and goats. Anything but prepackaged ingredients. The canned propane is temporary. Unfortunately, we will be using a regular outdoor refillable propane stove for the rest of the summer, but only because there is a burning ban and we are living on lumber land, which would be terrible for their company if we set it on fire. It's not ideal, but it's the compromise we came to.The utensils were already in our possession. The probably are from third world countries, would you like me to throw them out and whittle some more? That doesn't seem practical joe, I don't know what your point is.The camping gear and the furniture. Again what is your point? I already owned them all. should I sit on a rock out of stubbornness? I didn't claim that I'd be living a rustic life, or that I wanted to mirror people in poverty, only that I would be a little more connected to nature than I previously was. And if you can't see that going home to sit on a beach by the river is a little in contrast with coding and managing all day, then you've got blinders on. This is for fun, and a little self reflection."surburban entrepreneurs trying to cash in on their favorite sport of car-camping"To be fair, I've never had a conversation with you, so you couldn't possibly know how untrue this is. I wont comment, other than we aren't getting payed, and I live (and have lived) quite a different life than you assume. Really though, why do you find me so offensive joe?[Edited on June 14, 2010 at 3:13 PM. Reason : .]

I'm kinda at the point now where i disapprove of telling the mcdonalds morons where to go get wild food so they can just waste it and fuck everything up trying to get as much as possible. I've seen that scenario become reality the times i tried to teach some "average humans" about wood goodies.
