Barista = Coffee PourerCart Retrieval Technician = Cart PusherPharmaceutical Transit Specialist = Drug DealerThis is how we compensate for our failures in life. Let us conceal no longer our inabilities to procure middle-class status. The proletariat will crush the bourgeoisie!

maybe at a shitty coffee shopbut at a place where nothing is automated, measured, or timed, a good barista is much more than a coffee pourerand i don't drink or make coffee, so this isn't some stretch on behalf of myself or my barista
7/29/2010 11:25:47 PM
I used to be a barista.Soul-crushing shit. And by soul-crushing I mean the people you work with are stupid and the people you serve are stupid. But that was kind of the whole fast food industry in general. And yea I consider chain coffee stores Fast Food, and so is Panera Bread, fast casual my ass.
7/29/2010 11:26:31 PM
^I would think that coffee shops might have a slightly more intelligent clientelehowever, slightly intelligent people can be just as annoying as stupid people
7/29/2010 11:32:06 PM
<-- three coffee shops, including Starbucks, for five years.

I've worked at an indie shop and a Counter Culture shop but I've been doing it three and a half years.I bet fast-food or chain baristas do get pretty soul-crushed. It's great to work in a place where I can actually craft something and not just churn out burnt drip coffee and caramel frappes. I'm not ragging on chain stores but I'll take lower volume and more freedom if I can.

I believe in between my jobs at Percolator Lounge & Royal Bean, I applied at Starbucks b/c of the benefits package they give their employees that work 20 hours a week or more.I nailed the interview. But I never got a callback. I found out later from a friend of mine that worked at Starbucks that they don't look too kindly on hiring people that worked at independent coffee houses.

Sip n suck in the red light district, downtown raleigh for 2 years
7/30/2010 11:56:40 AM
Where is Busy Bee?
7/30/2010 11:57:42 AM
I worked at a bar that had a big ass espresso machine. After that, my respect for baristas went WAY up...and I held them in a pretty favorable light to begin with.
7/30/2010 11:59:13 AM
I'm curious as to which former baristas have a coffeebar set up in their house?I've got an espresso machine, Ghiradelli chocolate sauces, Monin & Torani syrups, jiggers, plastic cups, lids and straws
7/30/2010 12:06:29 PM
Downtown on Fayetteville Street is Busy Bee. It's a bar, too. Good beer and coffee in one place. I really want to get a machine for the house but I'm spoiled after using the LM GB5 at work and big Dosatrons at Cup. Your house sounds like a coffeeshop I want to go to!

7/30/2010 1:36:02 PM
^As much as I hate admitting it that's kind of fighting right now, I know Metricula had an English major (though to be fair she had a science major too), and yea, me.I still hate foaming milk.
7/30/2010 1:37:59 PM
