Post on up if you went as a kid. I went every summer for like a decade. Ran into someone who worked out there somewhat recently... they have a pool now?!? How unfair is that?

i went to real sleep away camp in the mountains for 4 weeks at at time but i was still jealous for awhile of kanata, cause that is where all my friends went. but then i realized my camp was cooler so i got over it.how fun is camp? amazingly fun. i <3 camp. i wish i could go back to those summers!was kanata just a week long? or could you just go for as many weeks as you wanted? i forget. i def did a church camp there though.[Edited on August 26, 2010 at 10:22 PM. I was always too much of a little bitch to go to sleepaway campI was that kid who cried and had to be taken home at sleepovers
8/26/2010 10:23:25 PM
damn. i tried to make my parents let me go for 6 weeks but my mom always cried when she dropped me off. i first went at 7. it was the bomb. went until i was like 15 too. then worked at camp for 2 summers.not kanata, but i mean same deal (except BETTER!)p.s. i was the kid that never understood when my friends cried and wanted to go home at sleepovers. PARTY POOPERS! WEENIES![Edited on August 26, 2010 at 10:25 PM. Reason : .]
8/26/2010 10:24:40 PM
kanata was a week, but you do do more than one in a row if you wanted. most I did was 3.
8/26/2010 10:25:38 PM
yea that is what i thought so you could choose to go for longer. that makes it cooler cause a week would NOT be long enough for me. <3 camps. i hope if i have kids they aren't weenies and want to go to camp. camp rules.
8/26/2010 10:26:29 PM
I have no clue what Camp Kanata is, but I went to some bullshit Christian camp for a week when I was 10 or 11, me and my buddy Patrick. They stuck some kid in our tent, the tent that my dad had just bought and told them not to stick any other kids in. Dude had a dent in the side of his shaved head from where his twin brother kicked him during delivery. Turned out he still wet the bed -- he pissed his sleeping bag every night. I remember waking up one morning to a puddle of pee that accumulated in the downhill corner of the tent. My dad still has this hilarious letter I wrote him asking to be picked up.
8/26/2010 10:27:39 PM
I never went to summer camp unless it was for baseball or basketball... but those Christian camps that Ernie is talking about are bad news. I'm never letting my kids go on those. I went on ONE Christian "retreat" when I was like 14 or 15 and pretty much everyone got shitfaced and hooked up.
8/26/2010 10:31:50 PM
yea my camp wasn't religious. religious camp is not cool camp.
8/26/2010 10:36:23 PM
I went for 7 years as a kid. Was a counselor through college summers (2006-2009). A lot of fun as a kid, even way more as a counselor.
8/26/2010 10:37:42 PM
went from when i was 8 to 14/15 cilt 15 never went back to be a counselor. Older sister was a counselor from like 1996-2000
8/26/2010 10:51:48 PM
I always wanted to go to camp but we were too poor and I probably would have hated it anyway. But it always seemed so cool in books/movies.
8/26/2010 11:52:23 PM
pretty sure i just thought i saw the word clitI'm AstralAdvent and i approved this message.
8/26/2010 11:58:09 PM
One of my friends got molested there (Kanata) in the mid 80's. No joke. The guy who did it got busted.
8/27/2010 12:04:15 AM
i'm trying to think of a molestered/busted jokebut that would be inappropriatei'm just saying it's there for anybody who happens to be less compassionate that i am
8/27/2010 12:07:32 AM
i already heard this story tonight!
8/27/2010 12:08:32 AM
^^I specifically included the word 'busted' for that very reason.
8/27/2010 12:11:06 AM
I went to YMCA day camp.I wanted to go to Camp Kanata pretty bad until I found out about Space Camp.I would have probably traded a few of my toes or even a couple of the less important fingers to go to Space Camp, but my parents wouldn't fork over the money. If they hadn't bought me a jet ski when I was 13 I probably would have been one of those total fuckups as opposed to the partial fuckup that I am today.Truth said in jest son.Truth said in jest.
8/27/2010 12:26:52 AM
AHA, Camp Kanata...By like my last two years there, I had my three "activities" worked out: 1) hanging out with the nurse, 2) arts/crafts, and 3) "sneaking" back in for a second round of arts/crafts and actually believing that nobody noticed.I also enjoyed a good race to get that afternoon snizzack.^I, too, was a "YMCA kid."[Edited on August 27, 2010 at 12:34 AM. 8/27/2010 12:29:04 AM
Powst
8/27/2010 12:36:46 AM
i did go to ymca day camp though until i was like 5. then i was like peace out mom and dad i'm leaving for 4 weeks to go shoot shit and boat. my mom cried. i laughed. ok not really but i didn't get the fuss i was just like "BYE THIS SHIT IS FUN"and i HATED arts and crafts. and the kids that did arts and crafts they were the ones that didn't like being outside. i never understood it.
8/27/2010 12:44:10 AM
If you went to YMCA day camp in Rocky Mount, NC it meant that you went swimming at Fountain Correctional Institute (the womens prison) every day. This was basically an invitation for creepy women who fucked up their own lives to stare at little kids as they pine for their own little ones that were either with the grandparents or in the care of the state. It was 190% creepier when they actually came into the boys changing room and stared at us while we changed. Some of them would even try to engage us in conversation. WTF kind of environment is that? I specifically remember the "Everyone makes mistakes. That's why pencils have erasers" poster in the hallway.
8/27/2010 12:50:56 AM
^Holy shit, that is crazy/awesome!!! Sorry you had to endure that, but seriously, that is insane. I think at the one in the Raleigh, we had to go to Optimist pool for the first few years. Then they got one on site. Also, why is khcadwal being so enthusiastic/aggressive with people?[Edited on August 27, 2010 at 1:23 AM. Reason : site]
8/27/2010 1:00:38 AM
because i hated arts and crafts and thought the kids in there were nerdsbut i was just being a bratty kid
8/27/2010 1:12:36 AM
I went to youth camp at caswell or mars hill for about 6 years before we started doing mission trips.I never got drunk or anything, because I was one of the good christian kids, there was some making out going on and doing unchristian things to people who had gone to sleep, but that's about it.And I went to Raven Knob with the boy scouts like 4 years.
8/27/2010 1:26:40 AM
never liked overnight camps. I could walk to Ravenscroft sports camps that were ran by the YMCA I think it was called Camp Play Ball or something, it was tight. also went to the AE Finley Y before that
8/27/2010 1:28:57 AM
i always hated camp, but i went to camp hardee (girl scout camp) & camp albemarle. the most awesome thing about camp albemarle was that my parents picked me up at the end of the week on our boat. my strongest memory was of being hungry all the time. i was rail thin as a kid and was ALWAYS hungry.Skack, i'm not really too surprised, being in RM. our 5th grade class took a trip to RJ Reynolds' cigarette factory, and were allowed to buy 1 thing in the gift shop. i bought a Budweiser brand can/bottle adapter thing. it was like a plastic top half of a bottle that snapped onto a can, w/ the bud logo on it. did you ever take a field trip like that? that would be soooooo wrong nowadays.
8/27/2010 8:32:23 AM
I went to Camp Kanata from Cabin 7 all the way through Cabin 15, or whatever the last cabin is. I ended up going for the last 3 weeks every summer (Sessions 7,8, &9).I even did the weekends at Christmas and Halloween a few years. This would have been like 1984-1991 or so.
8/27/2010 9:17:47 AM
^^ I did K-4 in the city schools (Braswell & Baskerville), but I moved to the county schools for 5-7 so I missed the RJR field trip. That sounds like it would have been hilarious though. I think David Sedaris talked about the field trip to RJR in one of his books.I remember the 4th grade field trip where we went to some old timey village and made fun of all the people who were dressed like the were pilgrims or something. They wouldn't let us bring our walkmans off the bus. All the girls on the field trip bought those pencils that looked like a stick, lol.
8/27/2010 12:21:54 PM
i always went to camp cherrio as a kid, its a YMCA camp and had fun, then i started going to Davidson Soccer camp
8/27/2010 3:11:31 PM
i went. i fucking hated it. they made us do a swimming test and designated us as either minnows, guppies, or sharks based on our swimming abilities. i was designated as a guppie and i was only allowed to swim in water that came up to my knees. so humiliating
8/27/2010 3:17:50 PM
^^ That's in my county
8/27/2010 3:22:25 PM
at first I was confused and thought you were talking the song:"Hello Mudda, hello Fadda, Here I am at Camp Granada.Camp is very entertaining,And they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining."But apparently camp kanata does exist.
8/27/2010 3:23:01 PM
i first read it as camp katana and thought it was some kinda badass ninja camp
8/27/2010 3:24:53 PM

Gold Band representin' what was yours? They changed the colors around a lot... wonder what they all mean now.
8/27/2010 5:31:40 PM
^ yeh, when i was there the bands corresponded to your swimming level. red for minnows, green for guppies (that was me), and black for sharks
8/28/2010 2:00:29 AM

can parents even afford to send their kids away to camp now?
8/28/2010 4:14:35 PM
^ there will always be parents willing to scrape together the cost of having a week off from their kids
8/28/2010 4:49:31 PM
Congrats, wolfweb. This thread inspired me to dedicate this week's issue of my webcomic to my Camp Kanata experiences. Check it out and check back each Monday for a new one.http://carveyournamecomics.wordpress.com/2010/09/06/cync-8-learn-chinese-swimming/

I went to a christian camp, The Vineyard, It was fine even for a heathen like me. My parents loved getting rid of me. I remember other kids getting care packages and being like WTF??? I remember being about seven and getting a postcard from Bermuda that said don;t bother writing home.
