I hate VistaI don't know why, but it has little idiosyncrasies that bother meI wonder if I can reinstall my webcam software and other little stuff like that, though?so should I go back to XP or upgrade to 7? astraladvent seems to think windows 7 is worth upgrading to, but I don't want another vista experienceand linux or mac or whatever is not really an option

is this virtual XP 32 bit?I'm not sure how Pro Tools will run in a virtual computerthe shit is already only kind of stable
9/20/2010 1:06:52 PM
If you dumb down all the visuals on vista it runs about 100 times faster.
9/20/2010 1:07:05 PM
You can use VMWare and your own legally-licensed copy of XP to make an excellent ersatz "XP Mode" in Windows 7 Home and also in Vista: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/11060/create-an-xp-mode-for-windows7-home-versions-and-vista/Also IIRC Vista stopped being so shitty after SP1, but if you're willing to upgrade to Windows 7 you should do so; finally you may not be a regular user of IE but many programs on your computer are, and IE9 will not work on XP, just Vista and later.

^that's probably more related to the 2D performance of your graphics cardTry http://www.karpfenteich.net/colorful/bitblt.htmlThe numbers are kinda confusing - you need above 30MB/sec or so to get a usable system, and once you reach about 100MB/sec you'll see animations practically instantly.
9/20/2010 1:19:38 PM
7 without a doubt.
9/20/2010 1:50:45 PM
well I just realized that shit's too expensive anyway, so I guess I'm just gonna have to deal with Vista's crappiness
9/20/2010 1:53:26 PM
Try and find a student license I paid $24.99 for mine. I have two and would be willing to PM. The should work for at least a few more installs.

Win 7 hands down.

I bought the Vista->Win 7 upgrade disk by mistake because I'm an idiot (I'm still using XP). I'll sell it to you if you want.
9/20/2010 5:51:09 PM
how much does it cost
9/20/2010 6:03:21 PM
There is no XP -> Windows 7 upgrade disk. You can use that disk to use a clean installation and it would still be completely legit, as you are upgrading from XP to Windows 7. You just can't keep your programs and everything intact, although you can do an archive and install, which keeps your programs and stuff in a Windows.old folder for easy data retrieval.
9/20/2010 6:05:07 PM
Another idea is to try to upgrade from XP to Vista and then from Vista to 7but unless your XP machine is a beast I wouldn't recommend it, instead you can get a new computer and transfer your data and reinstate your application settings.

I've been told that downgrading to XP from my Vista might cause some issues because I don't have XP drivers for my laptop model or somethingI don't know exactly what that means but I can get the software and a key for XP for free, which is why I am considering doing that instead of buying Windows 7
9/21/2010 12:47:58 PM
That's an excellent point that someone brought up to you. If driver's aren't available for your laptop for XP, then many things may not work (like sound or Internet).Have you ever stopped and considered re-installing Vista and getting rid of all the crap that comes on your laptop (all the software the manufacturer provides). Often times, I find that when people change OS's on pre-built computers or laptops, it's not because of the actual laptop, but rather the removal of A LOT of unnecessary programs/utilities/crap that they install for you, not to mention all the start up entries that get added by users who want instant AIM, Skype sign-ins when they turn on the laptop, as well as Adobe updates and the plethora of other shit that people install that sets itself up to automatically start when Windows starts. For instance, I bought a laptop from Brandon1 and it has Vista installed. He had stuff like AIM instant sign on and other programs set to startup when Windows starts up. This made Vista pretty slow to start up. I disabled all of that stuff and Vista is actually quite fast on what would be considered a low end laptop.I don't know what you're actually expecting, but sometimes, if you have a slow laptop, you just have a slow laptop. There's not much that can be done about it, except replacing it.
9/21/2010 12:54:20 PM
I'll join in.W7 all the way. If you hate Vista, its probably user error. I had Vista for a while and I loved it; sure I had a few issues, but nothing that wasn't easily solved (or user caused). But W7 is still that much better than Vista. And you don't need to dual boot if you install XP mode.
9/21/2010 12:57:59 PM
is there any way to like, get an XP skin or Windows 7 skin for Vista?there are just minor things about Vista that I don't like, but I can't think of them unless I encounter themlolI guess I'll just stick with VistaI just wanted a change
9/21/2010 12:59:05 PM
you can already customize the skin... probably close to either one, though you can't exactly match W7 due to the aero theme (AFAIK, they only work on W7).
9/21/2010 1:01:28 PM
9/21/2010 1:04:27 PM
yeah if anyone knows how to get an XP skin for Vista, let me (us) knowI liked the My Computer interface on XP 1000 times better
9/21/2010 1:07:38 PM
I like windows 95.
9/21/2010 4:15:11 PM
XP had the most god awful UI design everWhere's kiljadn
9/21/2010 4:36:24 PM
it's still better than vistaI'm currently looking for an XP-looking theme for Vista, but can't find anything
9/21/2010 7:37:00 PM
XP was pretty fuckin bad.
9/22/2010 9:37:48 PM
on kiljadn's birthday, I sent him a PM that read "Fuck you, buddy"On my birthday, he mailed me a copy of XP
9/22/2010 9:46:48 PM
The first thing I did when I got a new computer with XP is use the Windows Classic theme, because it has more screen real estate, is more customizable, and doesn't look like a Fisher-Price toy; I'd do it with Vista and 7 too but lots of stuff was not back-ported for that theme so now it looks garish and instead I use good ol' Aero if possible and Basic otherwise.
