Yea, it's a box turtle, and a pretty one at that. It's a male, too.But FYI, even though box turtles will soak themselves in mud and water, they're hardly an aquatic turtle, so having him in that kiddie pool isn't doing him much good, especially if that water is much above the top of his shell (which fortunately, it doesn't look like it is).Second of all, if you really plan on saving him, take him back to where you found him, walk him into the woods closest to the roadside you found him, and drop him back off. It's breeding season and the males will do crazy things to find nearby females (who'da thunk it?). They have very small home ranges, and you would be amazed at their spatial awareness. Yea, they sometimes cross roads and often get hit in the process of doing so, but bringing them home is often a death trap anyway, since most people get tired of turtles when they realize they live very long. So essentially, they live in a fairly small area over at least several decades. Dropping him off in a new spot you think looks better could end badly for him.If you decide to keep it as a pet, don't feed it lettuce and grass clippings. They'll eat small invertebrates (worms, grubs, caterpillars), but feed primarily on fruits and mushrooms. No, not that kind of mushrooms, you dope fiend.Sorry if I missed this as a parody thread of some sort.

couple things, first box turtles are terrestrial. please return it to the wild, but be certain to return it near the area you caught it. box turtles have a very high mortality when introduced to areas they are unfamiliar with.

what an idiot
9/23/2010 11:29:36 PM
well he is about 20 yds from where he was found and I only put him in the water because it was ~100 degrees outside and to take a few pictures. I have no intention of keeping him and I know how long they live and how they live. Thanks for nothing!

Cool turtle. I'm surprised how then get where they do sometimes. I had a huge one get into our fully fenced in back yard during Hurricane Fran.

you put in him water bc you thought he lived in water. don't lie.if he's alive now, that means he survived all the 100ish degree days we've had this summer. he's not going to overheat that easily. he's a native species.[Edited on September 24, 2010 at 7:11 AM. Reason : ish]
