10/8/2010 12:27:03 PM
if you make them at home and are going to make 10 you might as well make 100they freeze well (brush them with a little butter so they don't stick together) and it is basically the same amount of trouble to make a ton as it is to make a few
10/8/2010 12:46:57 PM
hell yeah, I might make some Mrs. T's when I get homeI remember back when I was a little kid we would go to my grandma's house and eat some killer polish meals. She would make 3-4 different types of homemade pierogies, she made her own kielbasa too. Then we'd have some stuffed cabbage on the side. I used to love her pierogies though, she'd make the usual potato and cheese/onion stuffed ones, but she also made a sauerkraut stuffed pierogie that went so good with corned beef.damn, I could go for a good corned beef and cabbage meal with pierogies on the side. Might have to make some this weekend. yummmmmmmm

As someone with Ruspolish heritage, I can say that I never had a Pierogi that made me say "That was a good Pierogi."However, I have on many occasions said "That was a good Knish."
10/9/2010 12:10:50 AM
DO WANT (and do miss)
10/9/2010 12:12:52 AM
AHAHAHAI actually threw out a box of pierogies (^those) yesterday (the 8th). Been sitting in the freezer for months, and I was like, "Meh, time to go..."Pasta stuffed with potatoes is the biggest nutritional/taste rip-off ever. It's like stuffing a potato with rice... "Hey, let's put these two super cheap starches together and try to make them taste good!"But that's just my opinion...AHA[Edited on October 9, 2010 at 1:37 AM. Reason : ]

^^What do you mean by "miss"? They have them in stores. I'll buy 'em and saute them with onions and serve with roasted chicken and broccoli heh.

Oh man, this takes me back to the days of living in a dorm eating at the dining hall as an undergrad; I used to love them! Haven't had them for about a decade now... .

Bridget, your opinion is ugly and wrong.

oh my godthat sounds awesomesauerkraut is actually really good for you
10/9/2010 9:35:24 AM

I bet a lasagna sandwich would be great......if you replaced the bread with cheese slices.Starch+starch is a total gyp. Potatoes in general are bullshit. I hate it when people use them in soups and stews. If I'ma eat a potato it better be seasoned and spiced and shit, not just tossed in a soup to provide filler and disappoint the hell out of me.
10/9/2010 11:36:27 PM
well if you're counting calories or watching your carbs, then yeah, stacking starches is a terrible idea but it's still fun/delicious sometimesand I must say, I cannot agree with your opinion on potatoesmashed potatoes beat the crap of bread, in my book
10/9/2010 11:42:51 PM
^Yeah, mashed potatoes are fixed with butter and spices and creamy shit and even cheese. They're delicious. But I've never thought, "Hey, you know what would make these mashed potatoes even better?!? Pasta shells!" Bacon, yes. But not pasta!Furthermore, the potato bite in a soup, stew, casserole, etc...is always the worst bite. I know potatoes are good for recipes and the cooked starches are valuable...but the potato itself is disgusting. It's like you should use them to cook, and then remove all the potatoes before serving. Now, if it's like a samosa or some shit where the potato has been spiced and prepared before being introduced into the mix, that's one thing. But most of the time there's just loads of bland potatoes roaming around and ruining the meal. And I guess that's where the problem is for me. The pierogis I've had are desolate, flavorless starch bombs while samosas (a theoretically similar dish) are delicious![Edited on October 10, 2010 at 2:30 PM. Reason : ]

I'm not sure I've ever known anyone who had such strong opinions on potatoes.

^^Over forty percent of our children's vegetable consumption comes from two sources: french fries and ketchup. And people freaked out cause the USDA didn't include potatoes in the WIC program, as if kids need more potatoes in their diet. They're all on about how the potato is a great cheap source of nutrition and isn't bad for you if you just eat it plain. But who eats a plain potato? Compared to all the other vegetables out there, the potato is probably the least palatable in plain format.

AHAHAHABridget, your opinions are ugly and wrong.Potatoes are far healthier and more nutritious than you're suggesting. But how can we blame you for thinking that? You're the queen of anti-personal-responsibility.To you, a potato isn't a time honored, delicious and nutritious vegetable with a rich history, found all over the world in hundreds of different varieties. (almost as awesome as beans..)No... To you, it's an evil monocultural medium to assist in the delivery of evil oils, fats, and chemicals. I mean, facts are facts, right Bridget? Most people in our culture eat potatoes in an unhealthy manner, so, (because no one is ever personally responsible ) it must the potato to blame. Yup. All potatoes are bad. Just listen to you: "Potatoes in general are bullshit.", "the potato bite in a soup, stew, casserole, etc...is always the worst bite.", (holy fucking wow that is wrong...), "the potato itself is disgusting.", "bland potatoes ... ruining the meal"
10/11/2010 8:15:52 AM
potatoes are from Peru

^^^Because of its ease of growth and ability to keep so long/well, the potato is already cheap enough. We don't need the government subsidizing potato purchases. For once, the USDA did something right instead of bending to the potato industry...but we'll see how long it lasts.Individuals already eat an average of 50 pounds of french fries a year and another 90 pounds of potatoes on top of that, and I'd bet those numbers get even larger the further down you go in income. I think we're getting plenty of this time-honored vegetable without putting it on WIC.And if you must know, I'm a smoker so, yeah, it takes a lot to rock these taste buds. Regardless of my smoking habit though, I'm right on about the plain potato. Compared to broccoli or celery or carrots or peas or beans or squash or whatever, the potato is the blandest plain vegetable out of the bunch. I mean, the potato has tons of sugar in it, but it doesn't even taste sweet! It's just a sad, pitiful vegetable.^I saw it in a documentary. Still, it was a documentary about obesity, and I'm sure they may have used some crazy stats. Here's something:

Your typical white potato is towards the bottom of the scale in terms of nutrition compared to other vegetables. Yes, those heirloom varieties are quite nutritious (and tasty), but seriously, when did you see them made available to the masses?I do love potatoes, though. A medium sized [white] potato nuked in the microwave, stuffed with strips of cheddar/Leicester cheese, with a light sprinkling of salt, and I am in heaven! In Turkey, kumpir is a popular street fast food, and I have no idea why, because it is not an Eastern dish. One of the best ways to eat a potato, though! Images:http://www.google.com/images?q=kumpir
10/11/2010 3:44:39 PM
^^^Yeah, I should join the potato of the month club so I can just be eating plain potatoes all over the place enjoying all the different varieties. And how you gonna shit talk the french fry? A good fry is a goddamn delicacy. Twinkie, my ass.
