I'm applying in Charlotte. I had a phone interview today and I thought it went terrible, but they want to meet me in person next week.I'm trying to figure out what the policy on cold-calling is these days. Does it still work?

I am. I am pretty much calling in every favor from people I ever knew to get my foot in somewhere. I've gotten a couple leads doing this.

I worked at the BK Lounge in high school. Fuck that noise.
1/4/2011 2:40:22 PM
Been doing this for a loooooooooooooooooooong time now. It really sucks. I'm a CE that has a PE, but no management experience. It's a no-mans-land where I can't get a management level job because of lack of actual experience and I can't get a lower level position because I'm "over qualified." It doesn't help that all my experience is in a particular nitch that no one wants to hire for now.

Thank you for calling Thank you for calling How may i help you how may i help youI'm AstralAdvent and i approved this message.

Yep, it fucking sucks and I just found out that yet another job I was counting on is going away because the guy that had started up his own company is being paid a ridiculous salary to join a big firm. Back to the drawing board for me. [Edited on January 4, 2011 at 2:54 PM. Reason : ]

if your services arent in demand you need to train yourself to do something else. Perhaps go back to school and get a degree that is in demand ?

My BS is in hort and I have a BA in English editing. I can do this!My goal is to work for the state in some capacity but I'm applying to a lot of private sector stuff. I like biotech and most of my work experience is there but I've been out of the field almost two years now. While I don't have this problem, what do women do about a baby gap in their work experience?
1/4/2011 4:19:48 PM
^I just started working for the state and I'm enjoying it (I previously worked for the State of TN, so working for the State of NC isn't that different).I also work in HR on the employment side, so explaining a gap of employment isn't required, but is important, I think. While you obviously can't be discriminated against because of a pregnancy and it can't be used against you, not all managers are cognizant of that. With so many applicants for positions these days, a lengthy gap in employment is enough to have hiring managers move on to another candidate. So, while you might not put it on a resume, maybe detail in your cover letter how you were "focusing on raising a family, but are now focused on rejoining the workforce."

I'm gonna begin the job hunt in earnest as I start my last semester of grad school this fall. Hope to land a full-time job by the beginning of 2012. Getting a job has always been very difficult for me, even back to high school. I put in over 20 apps before I got my first job (which I didn't apply to, someone just mentioned me to a person they knew) while my lazy peers who didn't WANT to work barely had to struggle. Similarly, the summer before I started grad school I applied to 36 positions, got nothing Hopefully next fall will send better fortunes my way [Edited on January 4, 2011 at 5:34 PM. Reason : ]

My fiancée is going through this now, been applying for 2.5 months not so much as a single followup. She is qualified and applying to similar positions to her previous work but nadda.

Got my first job while still in college from a tdub posting and my current job (after being laid off for 7 months) from craigslist.

^^^I should definitely be trying to utilize them as a networking resource. My goal is to stay in the Triangle area but what I've found is that most people are excited and willing to help you find resources and information. Thanks for the heads up.[Edited on January 4, 2011 at 7:03 PM. Reason : too slow!]
