1/4/2011 9:48:44 PM
I know I want to see a bunch of tourist bull shit but what is a good place(close to manhattan) to eat, hang out, and what not.
1/4/2011 9:56:07 PM
^^ for $80, it's a question worth asking. Good luck.
1/4/2011 9:56:48 PM
80 buck over ow many days? Just eat from food carts and pizza places and avoid expensive bars.
1/4/2011 11:26:22 PM

Has anyone ever taken a guided tour of NYC? It never really even crossed my mind that city tours could be fun until I took a carriage tour in Charleston, SC. Do I want to be one of the people on the two tiered buses?*I like a good history tour[Edited on January 4, 2011 at 11:40 PM. Reason : k]
1/4/2011 11:39:57 PM
^^Top of the Rock is better than the Empire State Building, but I'm not sure if its still open. Also a lot of people don't like the MOMA. I sure didn't. Definitely the Met though, and the Natural History museum (their dinosaur hall is the best).Go to McSorley's Ale house. It's the oldest bar in the city. For restaurants get a Zagat guide and go off that. There's so many choices it's pointless to start listing them. Though I will say if you like Indian food check out the Indian restaurants on 4th and 5th Street and 1st Ave. Awesome food on the cheap.
1/4/2011 11:50:57 PM
I really, really want to check out McSorely's

If by some dreadful turn of events you find yourself in Times Square you MUST do the following things:Check out the Max Neuhaus audio installation on the pedestrian island that runs between 45th and 46th Street where Broadway and 7th Avenue intersect :: http://www.timessquare.com/nyc-info/times-square-history/80?task=view" target="_blank">http://whttp://www.timessquare.com/nyc-info/times-square-history/80?task=viewCheap dinner - $6 burger and a beer during happy hour (4-7) at the Bull Moose Saloon. The regulars are a mix between union laborers and Broadway actors. http://www.yelp.com/biz/bull-moose-saloon-new-yorkThen have a drink or two at Jimmy's Corner (140 W. 44th St). It is a boxing bar and definitely not touristy. After completing this ritual you will be so dulled on cheese burger and booze that you will find yourself immune to the epileptic strobing of capitalism and the surging throngs of people that you will be able to walk along quite comfortably and see the sights.

MORE ADVICE: You probably have gobs of money and are hoping to throw it around recklessly while you're in NYC. Later you'll curse how damned expensive the city is and resent it a little. That's all perfectly natural. In case you are without lucre then you might benefit from this.Make sure to sign up for Nonsense NYC so you can see what kind of crazy shit is going on around the city. It will be a big listing of parties and shows and such sent out every Friday. Covers, if there are any, won't cost much more than $5 or $10. There's also FreeNYC. http://www.freenyc.net/ -- whoops no it died. And yet it lives on as: http://livingfreenyc.com/ -- this is a place to find free entertainment, wine tastings, food and drink at happy hour, drink promos at bars, etc.** Also check out this book. It is pretty damn good and the most recent edition was published Nov 30 2010 so it is pretty damn recent.Frommers NYC Free and Dirt Cheaphttp://www.amazon.com/Frommers-NYC-Free-Dirt-Cheap/dp/0470643749/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1294206419&sr=1-1[Edited on January 5, 2011 at 12:48 AM. Get some authentic NY pizza. My favorite place is Sbarro, there's a lot of them around so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

^^lmaoSeriously though, John's Pizza (no slices!) on 46th street between Broadway and 8th Ave. Lombardi's in Little Italy is good too (don't recall the address though, corner of ___ and Elizabeth I think). And the best place I had pizza by the slice is Rays near Cooper Union (I don't remember which Rays). My favorite all time pizza place in NYC was "The Pizzeria" next to Off the Wagon on MacDougal Street. Went out of business in 2009 though, not sure why. [Edited on January 5, 2011 at 4:14 PM. Reason : k]

Lombardis is fantastic but overpriced -- it's on the corner of Spring and Mott one block over from Mulberry I believe...
