post here if you buy indian entrees just to get the Naan to eat with it
1/5/2011 11:13:28 AM
Naa, I don't like indian food.
1/5/2011 11:14:17 AM
Most Indian entrees I can make at home... I'd go to restaurants just for the Naan.

I just buy the Naan and eat it at home. For a quick dessert I'll heat a piece of Naan in a frying pan with a little olive oil. A minute or two before it comes off the stove pour some honey on it.

You don't need an entree for naan. Just eating it by itself is heavenly. And like yuffie chan said, you can make some decent Indian dishes at home but you gotta have real skill/experience/tandoori ovens to make good naan. And even then, there is a huge difference between good naan and incredible naan.
1/5/2011 11:34:59 AM
Some of the best naan I've ever had was from a Nepalese restaurant in Japan. Random.
1/5/2011 11:40:00 AM
Trader Joes sells some good NaanTheir garlic naan....
1/5/2011 11:41:57 AM
You guys need to try Keema Naan (Naan stuffed with minced lamb meat). A good naan is hand made and roasted in a tandoori oven otherwise it will just taste like a version of machine made pita bread.
1/5/2011 11:43:18 AM
I'm pretty sure Naan is the reason I feel uncomfortably full after going to an Indian buffet. The other possiblitiy is the 4,000 calories in kabobs and butter chicken I usually eat.
1/5/2011 11:44:58 AM
i get kheema naan all the timei love goat meat dishes as a whole

I remember going to to spend the night at this Indian girl's house. Her parent's fed us tomato soup and Naan. I carb-loaded on that mess because tomato soup is
1/5/2011 12:19:14 PM
Naan is awesome but you guys should try kulchas (again there are different kinds of kulchas)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KulchaAlso, my fav is roomali rotiforward to 3.50

Kulchas are made with maida, which is supposedly almost pure wheat starch. Grocery store naan seems to be too. do the kulchas stay soft after they get cold? Bhatoora is the best tasting thing ever but obviously it is a big, puffy deep-fried no-no, so I've never made it. Half the times I've tried to get it in a restaurant it was cold by the time i received it.
1/5/2011 12:40:15 PM
I have never eaten Indian food
1/5/2011 12:45:27 PM
y you gotta assume it is indian tomato soup?you dont think an indian family grills up a burger once in awhile with pickles and some mustard?[Edited on January 5, 2011 at 12:48 PM. Reason : f]

That is something that needs to change in your life. There's an Indian buffet across from campus further west on Hillsborough street... it looks small and sketch from the outside but from what I remember of it it's awesome.I got some microwave things at the World Market yesterday, the brand is Tasty Bites. Some of the food is spicy, but it's a lot of curry and beans or vegetables that you just pour into a bowl and heat. So easy, so delicious. You need to get them when they're on sale though... otherwise they're like $3 each.
1/5/2011 12:49:17 PM
^^ Serving naan with American tomato soup would be an abomination upon all that is sacred
1/5/2011 12:58:50 PM
lol wolfpackgrrr...i think i am in lub with you @greenjay: kulchas are softer than naans and have stuffing...yum! i have never had a kulcha cold and i wouldnt recommend it. I never get the grocery store ones.

I live in an area with few indians, and no indian stores, just sections of korean and chinese markets. I can never find all the special flours and weird beans. watching youtube vids of indian grandmas making different breads and special dishes has helped me learn more, though. I make dal a couple times a month and take the leftovers as lunch. I found some okra so bindi masala is on the menu soon
1/5/2011 1:35:17 PM
bindi masala is my fav but i dont like the okra we get here...okra in india are lady's fingers and not fat fingers

^^ Yeah I don't know how India Mahal stays in business.
1/5/2011 2:10:25 PM
Nah, it's India Mahal, I couldn't remember the name. I couldn't tell you the last time I was there though, so it was probably years ago (like, middle school for me). I'll probably go this semester sometime to see if they're any good still. I don't remember them looking that worn down...

Stuffed naans are amazingly delicious (minced lamb, potatoes, garlic, etc). However, since I avoid foods made with white flour, I have them only 2-3 times a year. And they are made with ultra-refined white flour.Roti and chapati, on the other hand (non-raised flat round breads) can be found made with wholewheat flour. And then there are parathas, which are also unleavened (non-raised), and are usually stuffed with meat, vegetables, paneer, etc. Those are awesome as well.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paratha

1/5/2011 9:30:48 PM
I had a dosa for the first time a few weeks ago. I'm assuming it's not made from wheat since the chick I was with was chowing them down and she can't eat wheat. They were delicioso.
1/6/2011 9:15:38 AM
Thanks to this thread I am now going to try making kulchas
1/6/2011 9:17:12 AM
Dosa is made of powdered rice. You can get an instant mix pack in the indian store[Edited on January 6, 2011 at 9:51 AM. Reason : try onion rava dosa or uthapam next time....they are my fav kind of dosas!]
