then come to find out they don't thread. My family puts cornbread batter on the top layer of shepherd's pie. I thought this was normal until I was looking at recipes and realized nobody seems to do this. The really weird thing is the recipe is my great-grandmother's and she's from Ireland originally. Maybe she got to America and thought, "FUCK YEAH CORNBREAD'S AWESOME I'M PUTTING THAT SHIT ON EVERYTHING!!!!"

Your great-grandmother can rot in hell for putting cornbread on shepards pie.[Edited on February 23, 2011 at 7:59 PM. Reason : -]
2/23/2011 7:58:33 PM
it sounds yummy.what I thought was corn bread made by my g'ma was really corn pone. So I thought that was what all cornbread was like.
2/23/2011 8:00:29 PM
^^^sounds goodmy grandma always put some milk on top of her ice cream, and i found that i love it that way too]]
2/23/2011 8:00:41 PM
Box of Jiffy Corn Bread + some sugar + some creamed corn = YUMMY
2/23/2011 8:04:00 PM
It is quite tasty. You spread the batter quite thin so you end up with a crunchy cornbread layer over the potatoes.
2/23/2011 8:04:07 PM
2/23/2011 8:05:37 PM
My family also likes to put a dollop of sour cream on warm homemade apple sauce. I found out in adulthood this is weird too [Edited on February 23, 2011 at 8:07 PM. Reason : s]
2/23/2011 8:07:31 PM
yea... your family is fucking weird
2/23/2011 8:09:59 PM
more like shepherd's butt
2/23/2011 8:10:10 PM
What my grandmother calls goulash is nothing like any of the recipes on the interwebs or what people perceive when it comes up in conversation. Basically it was just beef (onions, paprika, whatever else) and brown stock/gravy over potatoes or rice w/ rye bread.Though, I'm going to say this is correct and all that tomato based shit is just wrong.
2/23/2011 8:10:39 PM
my mom's goulash is closer to this^
2/23/2011 8:13:37 PM
My wife enjoys milk and nutmeg (iirc) with her peaches... Something about Peaches and cream..oh and miracle whip with pears..
2/23/2011 8:15:42 PM
^^^ That sounds better than standard goulash imo.

My family doesn't do "Shepard's Pie" we do "Hamburger, Potato, Cheese Casserole." Literally, it's a layer of hamburger and onions, then a layer of mashed potatoes, and a layer of cheddar cheese. Mmm.
2/23/2011 9:15:32 PM
You people are sick.
2/23/2011 9:16:36 PM
i just saw the thread title and was going to post in here about my family's shepherd's pie, so i had to lol when i saw the first post. they do a layer of beef, then mashed potatoes, then corn. i've always really liked it but have since learned variations on the dish - all delicious!
2/23/2011 11:17:39 PM
I'm about 80% convinced you can take meat & potato as a base and you can end up with awesome no matter the route.
2/23/2011 11:24:09 PM
i don't even think this goes with this thread at all BUTwe always called hamburger patties without the bun beefcakesmy grandma would be like, "do you want a beefcake" and i'd be like "MMMMM"but apparently no one else in america does this....everyone i know thinks the work "beefcake" is weird but...i thought it was normal until like 2 years ago.
2/24/2011 1:55:22 AM
I don't think I've ever even had shepherds pie.
2/24/2011 2:43:06 AM
we put vinegar on french fries. think it's a Philly thing but not sure. I've been pestering BaDa to keep a bottle around for that reason. My dads side (very southern) puts salt an pepper on Cantaloupe, which I love also. I'll try to think of more.

malt vinegar with french fries is pretty standard.Shepherd's Pie is sacred, though. Speaking of which, I need to see if I am working on St. Patrick's Day this year so I can make sure I have my shepherd's pie recipe ready for the restaurant special that night.[Edited on February 24, 2011 at 3:20 AM. Reason : Shit, yeah. Not working. I get to act a fool instead.]
2/24/2011 3:18:59 AM
Mom always made mac n cheese with Mrs. Dash, the seasoning. I too thought this was totally normalAlso, why it isn't called ms. Dash I don't know
2/24/2011 4:49:55 AM
My granny used to make me grilled cheese sandwiches but she would make them in a convection oven toaster. It wasn't until I was a grown up that I found out you're supposed to put do it in a frying pan
2/24/2011 8:35:33 AM
2/24/2011 8:36:19 AM
Oh yeah, we put Old Bay in tuna casserole too.
2/24/2011 8:40:20 AM
2/24/2011 8:40:59 AM
i do it with the thick steak fries, similar to "chips" style fries from the UK. skinny fries remain ketchuped
2/24/2011 8:46:23 AM
better be malt vinegar
2/24/2011 8:48:45 AM

2/24/2011 8:49:34 AM

2/24/2011 8:50:22 AM
Sweet potato & Sausage stuffing on Thanksgiving...found out that's oddPlus I grew up eating "Glop" - basically a slice of rye bread with some good ham, with red onions and then a mixture of sour cream and cottage cheese. Salt and pepper to taste
2/24/2011 8:51:36 AM

2/24/2011 9:07:08 AM
Chicken on the grill. I thought it was normal for it to be burned to a crisp.
2/24/2011 9:33:10 AM
Fried livermush chunks in peaches and cream oatmeal...MMMMMMM
2/24/2011 9:51:29 AM
my mom puts raisins in her meat balls. evidently this is a Napels thing.^^^ my mom did the same thing but it was graham crackers and hot cocoa[Edited on February 24, 2011 at 10:23 AM. Reason : ..]
2/24/2011 10:22:42 AM
We always ate macaroni with plain tomato sauce.
2/24/2011 10:24:14 AM

2/24/2011 10:24:38 AM
my family always cooked things terribly and im very happy to know now that's not the case.honestly i cant remember things other than pizza, boxed mac and cheese, hamburger helper, chicken nuggets or pot roast.
2/24/2011 10:36:40 AM
^ I was the same way! Add Rice-A-Roni though.
2/24/2011 10:38:30 AM
considering i basically sustained myself on honey buns, fun dip and sundrop as a kid it's a wonder im not a shut in
2/24/2011 10:43:39 AM
It does explain a lot though
2/24/2011 10:50:47 AM
OH! I forgot Baked beans with a generous dollop of horseradish
2/24/2011 10:53:01 AM
2/24/2011 10:54:32 AM
I grew up eating rice with plain yogurt on it. I still enjoy it to this day, but found out in college that this was really weird.
2/24/2011 10:59:11 AM
