Man, would I love one of those.
2/25/2011 4:35:36 PM
They are pretty sweet.
2/25/2011 4:46:33 PM
I think I hit 40 hours by midday on Wednesday this week. At least I'll sleep well this weekend.
2/25/2011 4:53:13 PM
gosh, I do think the work week is more than 40 hours but damn, midday Wednesday? What do you do again, shadowrunner?
2/25/2011 4:54:11 PM
happens to the best of ushahaha, being on salary is SWEET when it's slow in the office. Unfortunately, they didn't hire me because it was slow in the office. They hired me because they have too much work to do.What that translates into is..."yeah yeah, we pay you salary...so, you're going to work until the jerb is done"not that I'm really complaining though.

Start with engineering things to last a lifetime.Stop with engineering things to be guaranteed to break after a certain amount of time.Start with engineering things to let customers repair broken merchandise rather than force them to throw away the entire thing to buy a whole new one.Bring these values back and You'll be able to save for retirement and support your family by only working 40 hours a week.Just like the good ol' days[Edited on February 25, 2011 at 4:59 PM. 2/25/2011 4:59:12 PM
i fucking hate working monday-fridaycan't wait to get back on my crazy-ass swing shift schedule where i can actually get some stuff done
2/25/2011 5:01:04 PM
I like my 37 hour work weeks 4/16 - 12/31
2/25/2011 5:04:18 PM
yeah, it's never slow for me. i'm on too many projects, inevitably at least one of them is always having some sort of crisis.i do environmental policy research, pmonk. the project currently kicking my butt is for the state of louisiana, modeling the economic risk from hurricane flooding under lots of potential levee and floodwall configurations they're considering along the coast, and under future uncertainty about climate change, land subsidence, population growth in the region, etc.
2/25/2011 5:05:19 PM
environmental shit suuuuuucksi feel bad for you son

my wife usually hits the 40 hour mark every three days. When she comes home from work tomorrow, she'll have worked 30 hours straight. I don't really count my hours. I probably work somewhere around 50/week these days.
2/25/2011 5:48:22 PM
I have one of those for the first time in my life and I kinda hate it. I can't sit still all day. I need a job that pays me to be socially awkward, because I'm really awesome at that.
2/25/2011 5:50:01 PM
I can't decide if I would like a 9-5 better than what I have now or not. My schedule now is 8:30-7 on Mondays and Tuesdays, 8:30-5 on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and then 8:30-12:30pm on Fridays. I HATE Mondays and Tuesdays, but I love my Fridays. It'd be nice to be able to go home at 5 every day....except Friday. That's the only thing I look forward to during the week. And free weekends of course. I think it'd be pretty hard for me to go back to working a full on a Friday after having this schedule for over 2 years.... [Edited on February 25, 2011 at 5:54 PM. Reason : half days ]
2/25/2011 5:52:59 PM
i do 6:30-3:30 mon-thurs and usually do 6:30-12:30 on friday. it's tolerable. it'll be better when the days get longer and DST kicks in. i need more outdoor time.
2/25/2011 5:54:54 PM
I'd like that ^. I can do mornings.....and I would love to have that much time in the afternoons.
2/25/2011 5:56:11 PM
i usually work 8-5 M,Th 8-530/6 T, W and like 8-2/3 on Friday. not too bad, imo.[Edited on February 25, 2011 at 5:56 PM. Reason : i'm only allowed 43 or 44 hours max, per week though.]
2/25/2011 5:56:14 PM
2/25/2011 5:58:35 PM
Work 8 to 4 and get a paid lunch and get to ride bikes all day!
2/25/2011 6:09:06 PM
my day job is pretty much a 40 hour 9-5. but i make up for it by working on personal projects most weeknights after i put my daughter to bed, and as much of the weekend as i can claim for myself
2/25/2011 6:34:07 PM
I hear you Shadowrunner. It's been 6 am to 7pm usually 6 days a week at least for most of the past 6 months for me. Training cycle and huge material inspection = shitty time for Engineer in Navy.
2/25/2011 6:35:44 PM
Is this 9-5 with time for lunch?I work 8-5ish (usually to 6 or so) with a 1 hour lunch? Sometimes I have to come in earlier, but usually just 8.
2/25/2011 6:38:07 PM
7:45-5 for me, with that 1 hour lunch/nap break. I enjoy the 1-2 hrs of overtime every pay period
2/25/2011 6:42:42 PM
try 5:30-5:30 +/- a couple hours on either end, plus a 30hr shift once a week. one weekend off a month.
2/25/2011 6:46:39 PM
Right now I am 8:30am-5pm w/ one hour lunch M-F (state of SC workers work 37.5 hrs a week, so I guess a 1/2 hr lunch is paid!).With that said, once an employee becomes permanent (usually after a year), then we have the option to work an AWS and/or telecommute. Was thinking about trying to get at least every other Friday off, but may just up that to every Friday since it would be nice to be able to have long weekends!
2/25/2011 6:48:46 PM
yeah, I'm looking forward to the day when I work a 40-hour week. I think maybe average now is probably 45-50, but there have been plenty of times when it was 60-70+ and I was hitting 40 by the middle of Wednesday, just like you said. Even now, I had to work last weekend, and again this weekend...so yeah, it'll probably be 60+ for a couple of weeks here.
2/25/2011 6:49:06 PM
I fear the monotony would eat me alive
2/25/2011 6:53:27 PM
the monotony isn't in the schedule, it's in the work. boring jobs are boring no matter what the hours.
2/25/2011 7:16:00 PM
working 5 days to enjoy 2? i don't know if you gamble, but thems shit odds...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rouozDy_MNY&playnext=1&list=PL9C0C7A5287E46E82
2/25/2011 7:28:37 PM
I worked 40 hours by Wednesday as well. but my job is easy as shit so I didn't mind too much.
2/25/2011 7:31:57 PM
Haha I am a salary engineer and I'm at 45-50 hrs/week it's pretty awesome.
2/25/2011 7:37:23 PM
You know what I love? 12 hour work days. 4 days on followed by 4 days off with 2 hour lunches each work day. Oh and when i take the "mandatory" week vacation off, I get 12 days off whereas my wife only gets 9 when she takes her work week off. [Edited on February 25, 2011 at 8:06 PM. Reason : .]
2/25/2011 8:04:27 PM
Fuck salary, hourly is the shit as long as you get basic benefits
2/25/2011 8:09:49 PM
Fuck hourly, salary is the shit when your workplace closes (ie due to inclement weather or holiday) and you're still getting paid.
2/25/2011 8:18:20 PM
i work ~80 hours one week and 60 the next. (i get every other weekend off)
2/25/2011 8:36:32 PM
2/25/2011 9:25:35 PM
ya'll work 9-5? I work either 8-5 or 9-6...
2/25/2011 9:26:55 PM
im killing 80 hours this work week
2/25/2011 9:31:27 PM
i work 30-35 and take 3 grad classes. may die.
2/25/2011 9:53:12 PM
Another nice thing about being paid hourly is that it gives your employer incentive not to pile too much work on you. If they really want to you get all that extra shit done, they will have to pay for it. So you either end up with more time (because they are unwilling to pay you to work longer) or more money (because they are willing to pay you to work longer).[Edited on February 25, 2011 at 10:05 PM. 2/25/2011 10:05:05 PM
i've been averaging 55hrs/wk (not counting travel time and working at home) and basically since the first of the year and just got the "its perceived you guys aren't working long enough hours" speech today.le sigh. i'm tired.
2/25/2011 11:49:15 PM
hourly/contract FTW. Fuck salary.
2/25/2011 11:59:31 PM
My new salaried hourly engineering job pays me 40 hours a week.We have one of the most efficient, highest-producing engineering offices in our industry, if not the fastest and most accurate. It's a nice place to be.
2/26/2011 12:14:10 AM
I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at my desk every day M-F. Lunch and sometimes dinner on Sat/Sun.Going on 3.5 years now. Still unsure why I haven't quit.
