Got a coworker from another office in town, decide it would be good to get him something with a bit of local flavor. Suggest "The Pit" couple other casual things in town.Local coworker says its "out of his price range", suggests generic shitty mexican restaurant. Thats probably what we're gonna end up doing.[insert facepalm.jpg]

which mexican joint?

3/9/2011 2:11:09 PM
lol not raleigh
3/9/2011 2:13:33 PM
Go to Clyde Cooper's. It is better than the pit and cheaper than any Mexican place. Been here since the 30's I think, at least. That's local flavor right there.
3/9/2011 2:14:07 PM
^^theres a location in cary^Yeah with locals I would go there but its a manager from out of town and we've got a whole smattering of internationals and transplants that I figured it would be a little better for the situation.
3/9/2011 2:16:08 PM
buffalo wings and rings in morrisville
3/9/2011 2:17:09 PM
there's one of those in brier creek/dale...thats still Raleigh, if barely
3/9/2011 2:17:16 PM
point is I think we can do better than going to someplace that puts out the same tacos and burritos as every other "el rodeo" across america for once in a while for a business situation
3/9/2011 2:19:11 PM
dinner with shmucks
3/9/2011 2:20:51 PM
Los Tres Magueyes is still as generic as the rest of them, but I've found that they are typically a little better/less greasy than El Rodeo, El Dorado, etc. I'd go there if I had to chose one.[Edited on March 9, 2011 at 2:29 PM. Reason : -]
3/9/2011 2:21:55 PM
I guess the problem is I'm the only native N. Carolinian in the company, everybody else is international or transplant so I guess they don't give a crap about the nice local stuff.
3/9/2011 2:23:14 PM
$15 is out of his price range so he's going to go spend $11 on a pile of greasey cheese and beef.
3/9/2011 2:25:19 PM
In a situation like that make the person who's going to be most difficult about it plan it. If he refuses, his opinion gets automatically nullified.

Side note:One time I was in LTM and overheard some guy saying how much they loved the place and that they drove all the way from Charlotte to eat there (to the one on the corner of Maynard and Kildare)That said this was many, many years ago. I think there were only a few in existence and they hadn't quite sold out to the generic chain suppliers/offerings at the time. There was still a decent quality gap between them and the other chains. I remember thinking, sure it's good, but Charlotte? Seriously?Maybe that guy is working in your company now.[Edited on March 9, 2011 at 2:34 PM. Reason : -]

i didnt read this thread at all but los tres magueyes is fucking awesomeused to go have margarita breakfast over off maynard all the time
3/9/2011 2:33:54 PM
3/9/2011 2:38:59 PM
also, sometimes i feel like the pit should be in new york, ya know?like we've got all these real bbq joints, why do we need a fancy one?
3/9/2011 2:43:52 PM
^ so you can take out of towners who would be scared off by a real bbq joint
3/9/2011 2:45:08 PM
These people are not worth taking someplace decent. If they're content with garbage, then let them eat garbage. They wouldn't appreciate good food anyway.
3/9/2011 2:46:15 PM
At the end of the day Los Tres Mag. may be a fine establishment, but I'm not suggesting it for the same reason I wouldn't suggest an IHOP. I LOVE IHOP, but lets have some class and hospitality and do something just a little bit nicer and more unique than something someone can get in any other city in america [/blog]

This thread reminds me of the one where people were bitching about why there are Olive Garden restaurants in NYC.
3/9/2011 2:49:16 PM
what the fuck is your coworkers problem?entrees at The Pit start at $11.99shitty Mexican costs about the same...wait, is he a big fat dude?
3/9/2011 2:49:22 PM
Is he planning on picking up the tab for everyone?
3/9/2011 2:50:53 PM
yeah he can fuck himself if he's just being personally cheapand if he insists on Mexican take him to Chubby's Tacos(shits good)
3/9/2011 2:52:05 PM
$11.99 at a crappy Mexican restaurant? Most of the crappy ones I go to have a list of plates for $6.25, another list for $6.50 and finally the elite of the elite. The $6.75 list. For the big spender.Of course you could go high hog and get the Grande Especial where they just give you one of every permutation that they figured out on combining beef, chicken, beans, rice, and cheese.[Edited on March 9, 2011 at 2:55 PM. 3/9/2011 2:53:22 PM
I think the problem is partly the location as well, I listed a couple other neat things like irregardless and the big easy, both places you could get something for ~15 bucks and I think he just doesn't want to go into town. These people I work with think going into Raleigh is such a chore even though we work right at US1 and 40 . This aint new york people we can be downtown in 10 minutes from where we are at.
3/9/2011 2:53:56 PM
how selfish and provincialthey don't want to show their coworker the best their city has to offer because parking MIGHT be an inconvenience (but it won't)I bet they don't want to waddle their fat asses more than a few feet from the handicapped spot into the buffet line - huffing and puffing all the way
3/9/2011 2:55:38 PM
especially on a wednesday night - there's no one downtown. i could see it being more of an issue on a friday but not in the middle of the week. it sounds like your coworker needs to branch out more.
3/9/2011 2:56:00 PM
^^You're right, I had forgotten about Golden Corral.[Edited on March 9, 2011 at 2:57 PM. Reason : -]

wow, they are missing out on a lot of great restaurants if they refuse to go downtownDavid's Dumpling and Noodle Bar is fantastic and very reasonably priced.[Edited on March 9, 2011 at 2:59 PM. Reason : f]
3/9/2011 2:58:44 PM
Personally, i wouldn't cater to them, and let him/them not show up. They'll only make themselves look bad to the out of town manager. If i'm put in charge of planning something like that, I'd only cater towards the person that we're going out to dinner for.
3/9/2011 3:00:38 PM
Sitti
3/9/2011 3:01:23 PM
We have people like that here. They aren't invited next time.
3/9/2011 3:07:11 PM
yeah I'd focus more on impressing the out of town managerDON'T BUDGE ON THIS UNLESS OUT OF TOWN GUY WANTS GENERIC SHITTY MEXICAN
3/9/2011 3:10:44 PM
yeah if things weren't so screwed up here politically I'd just say screw it but the fact that we've got so few people makes everything personal and then you have to keep dealing with him everydayI mean its not like I really want to spend my off time hanging out with a bunch of coworkers half of whom are 10~20 years older than me anyway but I'm just gonna do it to make my life easier in the long run.
3/9/2011 3:11:39 PM
do you want peace in the office or do you want to advance at work?
3/9/2011 3:15:52 PM
haha at this particular place peace in the office lets just say there are better long term prospects
3/9/2011 3:17:27 PM
What did your other coworkers have to say about The Pit?
3/9/2011 3:19:46 PM
You guys should totally eat at Oakwood Cafe if its only like 5 of youhttp://oakwoodcaferaleigh.com/Dinner%20Menu.htmreasonably priced and great flavorsI bet your pedestrian coworker likes steak
3/9/2011 3:22:08 PM
^^ Thats the worst part of it is, nobody else is local even from college and they just live and do stuff around cary/morrisville and never go into raleigh or durham for shit. Work has us travel a lot so I assume they spend most of their time at home but they don't know shit about anything local. Our office is just 4 years old. I was the first employee here and everyone else was hired out from other offices or locations. I'm the only one who seems to do anything around town and I'm actually boring as fuck [Edited on March 9, 2011 at 3:23 PM. Reason : extra ^]
3/9/2011 3:22:53 PM
^^Oakwood Cafe rules.Your co-workers sound like boring assholes, but pretty par for the course for transplants who live in the burbs and work in generic office parks on the fringes of Raleigh.
3/9/2011 3:27:22 PM
if you've got seniority with the company you should throw it around a bit
3/9/2011 3:31:25 PM
it is a business dinner and the company is not paying?
3/9/2011 3:35:31 PM
Lionheart I feel like I am the you of my office
3/9/2011 3:35:44 PM
^^Not a business dinner, more just hospitality taking this guy out, still I don't think $15~20 is unreasonable to spend for a one time thing at a decent rest.[Edited on March 9, 2011 at 3:56 PM. Reason : ps. we're all engineers or tech people its not like we're all making 25K a year]
