Nascar brings in more money than any other sport in this state. Its been this way for like 10 yearsIf it was hockey or soccer everyone else would be the same way about it.

NASCAR isn't a sport. It's a governing body. It's like saying the NBA is a sport. North Carolina TWW for not catching it.
3/18/2011 9:00:36 PM
more to the point, it's a company that keeps the france family living in the style to which they've become accustomed. it doesn't even really function like the nba or nfl[Edited on March 18, 2011 at 9:09 PM. Reason : i wonder how big of a campaign contribution coming out of it]

So the drivers and crew members are not athletes? That's funny cause most of them spend more time in the gym than just about everyone on this board training. Point is, don't argue about something you know nothing about. It makes you look stupid

I haven't clicked the links, but the quotes say they are making "stock car racing" our sport, and it names nascar as an example - aka put in by the journalist for the article
3/20/2011 2:24:41 AM
This stuff doesn't take enough time or money to be concerned about.
3/20/2011 2:46:34 AM
Almost every NASCAR team is based out of North Carolina, and they have a bunch of offices in the state. It is a product of North Carolina. Everyone should know that. And there really isn't another sport which would be better served to be our state sport. I'm not a big fan, but the connection between stock car racing and North Carolina is clear. It's the same reason the Venus Flytrap was named as a state symbol, because it is found almost exclusively in our state.Yes, college basketball is popular and all, but there are a lot of places that like college basketball. In addition, people in the TRIANGLE love college basketball, the further away you get, the less people care. We're the only state that can reasonably claim stock car/auto racing, as long as we aren't talking about open wheel.
3/20/2011 2:59:50 AM
ugggg, at least choose a real sport.
3/20/2011 7:50:52 AM
We don't need no fucking state sport. For fucks sake. How about they figured out how to stop pissing away money doing stupid shit.

3/20/2011 1:25:50 PM
This....... is sad news.
3/20/2011 1:26:59 PM
A huge amount of bills in legislatures are for stupid shit like this. Honoring some fire department, approving of a new school being built, renaming a highway for a former politician, or making Thursday Siamese Cat Day. It's just how things go, and it really costs next to nothing, because the bills are noncontroversial and usually require very little in terms of application, and they are the product of only a couple of legislators, who just write a little one page bill.I hate when people act like we are wasting time or money on these things that could be better spent elsewhere. It's such a poor understanding of how things actually work. It's not like the budget issue isn't getting addressed because so much time is spent figuring out what our state sport is going to be.
3/20/2011 9:06:18 PM
^ Yep, this stuff happens at every level of government, go to your local county commisioners meeting, or turn on cspan and watch the senate, and you will see the same kind of things. It doesn't take any significant money and it might take 15 minutes at most for the entire assembly.[Edited on March 20, 2011 at 9:35 PM.
