it gave me northern. i was born, raised, & still live in rocky mount, nc. hahai guess because i don't say hill the same as heel, pen/pin, tent/tint, etc. i also say marry different than merry and mary.my parents, grandparents, etc all speak or spoke with that old school northeastern NC southern accent. not the weird british-sounding one. sometime thing in between. mom says "on" like you say "own". NeutralYou`re not Northern, Southern, or Western, you`re just plain -American-. Your national identity is more important than your local identity, because you don`t really have a local identity. You might be from the region in that map, which is defined by this kind of accent, but you could easily not be. Or maybe you just moved around a lot growing up.

i got western too, and do not agree with it.

Usually when i take these I get a very localized accent specific to philly and parts of south jersey... which is quite accurate.
5/3/2011 1:15:27 PM
i have the same accent as daniel day-lewis when he calls Gandhi a slur and tells him to get off the pavementI'LL BET A LOT OF YOU DIDN'T KNOW THAT HE WAS IN GANDHI WITH SIR BEN KINGSLEY. I CELEBRATE HIS ENTIRE BODY OF WORK.

I prefer eastern style.

ITT I am a damn Yankee
Northern
You have a Northern accent. That could either be the Chicago/Detroit/Cleveland/Buffalo accent (easily recognizable) or the Western New England accent that news networks go for.

I was born in NY with all upstate NY-based relatives and then raised in NC. Southerners say I sound pretty neutral or slightly yankee and my relatives all say I sound like a southerner. Guess that makes me pretty neutral. [Edited on May 3, 2011 at 1:27 PM. Reason : .]

Why is Charleston not included in the Southern Accent Map?Do they have their own accent? I would say I sound more like someone from Charleston than New Orleans. This test is garbage.

How the hell am I the only southern accent so far?? I didn't think mine was bad until an Australian guy pinned me directly to North Carolina. It's kind of costal-southern I guess.
5/3/2011 1:31:30 PM
I'm neutral, but my mom is from NY and my dad's from Fuquay, so it makes sense.
5/3/2011 1:32:46 PM
I'm not doing that quiz.. but I was born and raised in NJ.Ppl have described my accent as "northern with a southern twang"lol
5/3/2011 1:33:19 PM
I definitely have a slight southern accent when I'm not trying to suppress it. But I'd say neutral is pretty spot on.
5/3/2011 1:33:45 PM
apparently i'm northern
5/3/2011 1:34:36 PM
The "I"-"Ah" question is throwing me over to southern. I only do it when I'm talking fast.
5/3/2011 1:34:53 PM

says i have a neutral one, but i really have a southern one. probably just sucked at answering the questions, ha.
5/3/2011 1:42:44 PM
I got Neutral, which is amusing because my out of state friends frequently (oh so frequently) are amused by how Southern my accent is. I think the fact that I know how to pronounce words threw the quiz off. I know I have inflections, I can hear it myself (in recordings, I hate it) and countless people are amused by it, but a lot of what they picked in the quiz must have been words I pronounce properly.
5/3/2011 1:46:06 PM
says I'm southern...however I kind of disagree w/ the way it was done...alot of our accent/dialect comes with the slowness in our speech.
5/3/2011 1:46:15 PM
5/3/2011 1:47:41 PM
NeutralBut I don't agree with it. Born, raised, and lived in NC my whole life. My accent may not be as strong as some around here...but I definitely have a southern accent. Oh well...Just took it again and got Southern...maybe I mistakenly clicked an answer I didn't mean to or something. Because I'm pretty sure I didn't change my answers (not intentionally anyway)[Edited on May 3, 2011 at 1:56 PM. Reason : ]

Neutral. All the schools I went to growing up had military kids so everyone had a mix of accents. I guess they're all close to neutral. A handful of local kids had southern accents.

I've lived in Raleigh all my life and my profession requires a lot of speaking, so I'd say I have a fairly neutral-southern accent. When I drink though i've been told it becomes more Johnston county-esque.
5/3/2011 1:54:17 PM
^Born and raised in Johnston County here...I have a fairly neutral accent considering that, though. Certain words make my accent come out a little more though.

Neutral, but born and raised in Raleigh, I've never moved. My dad I think did his best to make sure we never had southern accents... my sister came home from kindergarten or preschool or something and said they learned to count to fayhv (idk how you'd spell it?), and he spent the next few minutes teaching her how to say "five".Also, one thing I've noticed, especially this weekend at my cousin's wedding, Jersey/NY girls etcetera say "so" instead of "that". Like, they left a lot of things in the bathroom in the reception hall, one woman said something along the lines of leaving her purse there as well, but was was told "I wouldn't leave something so valuable..."Or, it wasn't -so- bad versus it wasn't -that- bad.Which do you say?Edit: my accent changes when I'm with different people. If I'm hanging around people with deep southern accents, I'm slightly more southern. This winter, I had an Israeli/New York combination accent. Some words I say I almost sound English. It's weird.
