I love it when 0EPII1 tries to be funny, but fails miserably.....because...you know...he was born without a sense of humor and everything.

all my posts have to do with health, and all your posts have to do with crap and nonsense.to each his own.as for emce, how the hell is HE criticizing me for being unfunny, when the vast majority of his posts are him hitting on twwers, both males and females (and making graphic 'funny' sexual comments about twwers)? yeah, it was funny the first 3 times, but not 60,000 times.p.s. i would rather be without a sense of humor than be a nasty hypersexualized wannabe tuff guy.[Edited on May 16, 2011 at 9:36 AM. I don't think anyone here, including the scientists, is blaming obesity on one gene. Well, the obesity explosion that is (because there are disorders where obesity is always a factor due to a single gene change). Most of the obesity research I've seen always states it's a multifactorial issue (genes + environment).[Edited on May 16, 2011 at 10:31 AM. Reason : .]

^I dont think genetics is as big of an issue. Obesity worldwide has doubled in less than 30 years. I think you would be hard press to find a serious genetic link to account for that.I think it has to do more with food production/processed foods and exercise myself. And so does WHOhttp://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs311/en/index.htmlAlso, this links directly with the explosion of diabetes.
5/16/2011 11:36:09 AM
They actually have found links between being obese and genetics as there are numerous alleles that have been found to give someone that genetic predisposition. However, I have yet to hear someone blame the explosion on generics and use it for blame. Many of the studies I have seen focus more on how this information can help people avoid obesity and want to create a more personalized form of care for different people. Obviousy exercise and the right diet are important (except in some single gene disorders), but helping someone understand how their genetic make-up will affect how they respond to said exercise and diet regimens has a lot of value.

I don't think there is a gene "switch." Its not a damn on/off button that can be pushed whenever. Read this paper: I think this may be what you are referring to. I do similar studies in non human primates where animals are fed a soy-based protein diet vs a casein-based protein diet, and the epigenetic effects are currently being studied.http://journals.cambridge.org/download.php?file=%2FBJN%2FBJN97_06%2FS0007114507682920a.pdf&code=5179d5e9262e5e036ca4bcf617ba24dfBasically, if you don't want to read the paper:If your mom is pregnant with you and doesn't eat the right foods, you have an increased chance of becoming obese after your born.

It's not saying a switch that turns on/off obesity... It controls whether or not other genes can work that encode for other metabolic cascades[Edited on May 16, 2011 at 3:11 PM. Reason : KLF14 is a transciption factor ]

Ooo you're right.. I Google Scholared this: Epigenetic regulation of transcription: a mechanism for inducing variations in phenotype (fetal programming) by differences in nutrition during early life? That may help...
