keep me from getting my return? I was supposed to get back around $600 last year, and got a check for $2 from the gov't. NC State was taking back some of what I owe them. Now i'm doing turbotax after filing an extension and it's asking me if i paid back some student loan interest this year and i want to say fuck yeah, about $500 worth! would that be right? I called the collections agency and it's in default and I'm broke as shit right now, so I told them I'd call them when i got some more income.little help. this is my second time ever filing, so any help is appreciated!!

if you have or can get a secu account, they do your taxes for you for free...better than H&R Block, etc.

Well, I think the loan is technically in default if he stops paying it. But he can't get the loan forgiven through bankruptcy, so he'll have to eventually man up and pay it off. As far as I know, student loans are impossible to write off, and the creditors have a large number of protections.

You need the form to tell you how much interest you paid on your student loans. But the gubbment is gonna get your refund if this is a federal loan anyway.
7/27/2011 3:28:45 PM
7/27/2011 3:29:16 PM
do you not have $118 to your name? that is fucking obsurd. Sell something, offer to do work for freinds family and neighbors. You dont deserve a refund if you cant pay your debts, that is just stupid
7/27/2011 3:30:27 PM
You should be able to call the organization that is handling the loan (acs, aes, etica) and get a statement outlining how much went to principal and interest. If one place received $600 or more in interest payments from you last year then they were/are required to send to you a 1098e (I assume this to be true even if they get the irs to withhold it from a refund). If it's less than $600 it's your responsibility to find out.[Edited on July 27, 2011 at 3:31 PM. Reason : []

7/27/2011 4:15:53 PM
Unless I'm missing something, if you haven't paid any of your student loans, then you didn't pay any interest towards it. So you wont get any refund. I really doubt you paid $600 IN INTEREST on anythingI made similar mistakes as you when I was young, and believe me its a pain in the ass to unbury yourself from even minor shit when it starts to pile up. If you have any desire to rent a place or buy anything with credit in the next 7-10 years, you really need to get your shit in gear

Well, as I stated, you might be able to walk away from auto loans/house loans/personal loans, but you'll eventually have to pay your student loans one way or another.

Neither a borrower nor a lender be; For loan oft loses both itself and friend, And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry. This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man....yeah, there are two parts to that equation there

ok im lost now(i am NOT being mean or anything so dont think im trying to troll or whatever)so we shouldn't lend or borrow money, therefore by getting (and spending) credit i shouldn't be obliged to pay it back b/c a bank was stupid enough to give me one? thats what im gathering from hamlet (is that right, to thyne own self be true i remembered ) my mind is wide open. and maybe im reading it wrong. im not here to just disagree with you. i work with financial aid on a daily basis...once you default on your loan the govt can A) garnish wages/returns B) keep you from getting/retaining professional certifications/licensure. C) require you to pay debt in full D) file a lawsuit that can prevent you from purchasing assets. The government always will get this money back, regardless of if you intend to pay them or not. not paying it is one of the stupidest things you can do, because its also going to remain a negative hit on your credit score/report for 7 years from the day you get it settled. your best bet would be to call your lender and get set up on a payment plan. they'll start you on one for sometimes as low as $20/month. [Edited on July 27, 2011 at 8:49 PM. Reason : ..]

Wow, yea, they're usually lenient as hell, too. At one point I told student loans there was no way I could make the payments in full for the time being and they were fine with half until my finances improved.
