So I have an interview tomorrow with a placement agency- do I need to dress up? or will business casual be fine (and how casual is fine if so). They are not the ones making the decision, and this is just a first interview, so wearing a suit feels silly- but khakis and a button up? khakis and a polo?

You'll feel more silly for under-dressing than overdressing.

Like a recruiting firm? I wore business casual, but I was also seeing a friend who worked there. At least throw on a tie I guess.

Wear a suit with a shirt/tie combo underneath that will stand alone just fine if you decide to discard the suit coat. Discard the tie if it really feels overly formal and you are encouraged to do so by the company. Roll with whatever makes you comfortable once you get there and meet the interviewers.

Even if they are the recruiter you should dress how you would for an interview. They're the ones that will pass on information to whatever company/doctor's office/whatever you interview with in the future.Better to have a good impression now
