My former field engineer was awesome. I mean if you spelled out what he needed to do he would do it better and faster than anything you could imagine.. untile he ran into an unexplained situation and he was stumped like a roomba under a barstool. but i think he was a 1 in 10 shot the rest don't want to do shit

everyone says the same thing about the generation following their own. fact of the matter is kids will be kids and have their own style, some good and some bad. either way kids turn into adults and rise to the occasion when need be. it's worked for millions of years, so i don't see it stopping just because of real housewives of nj.

our parents didn't appreciate not having to endure a depression, we don't appreciate growing up with multiple car households, kids today don't appreciate tvs in their rooms and high speed internet. its all the same shit, really.

I really think those of us approaching 30 aren't that lazy but when technology was thrown into the mix those of us who grew up with computers are much quicker than even those approaching 40.I know i could engineer and cad a building faster then the older CAD operators could CAD what a Senior engineer had sketched out by hand for them. yet since i was the new guy the senior cad operator got paid more than i did and the senior engineer got paid twice what i did and took twice as long to do it. I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on the frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words. When I was a boy, we were taught to be discrete and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly wise and impatient of restraint.

i dunno, the college grad I hired in June is better than half of my veteran team already in terms of ability and work ethic. I definitely see some evidence of an entitled generation with these gen Y'ers, but the baby boomers said the same thing about us Gen Xers.Then again, which generation is running our government? They pretty much suck.

This thread stupid. There are good ones, there are bad ones, just like anything. All of these expectations, and views of the 'next' generation are just PERSONAL opinions. They get hired all the time, if they work out, great, and if they suck, oh well they will find a way to get rid of you and hire someone else. Honestly I have seen people of all age groups to suck, I have see supervisors go out of their way to help a new employee get great training, and I have also seen the opposite. This is stupid trying to blame poor work ethic on the 'next' generation. And in addition to that, if you are the hiring party, and you find yourself consistently recruiting people with poor work ethic, lets also consider your screening skills. Nothing I hate more that 'seasoned' workers gossiping about a 23 yo that they think is lazy, or not smart enough, or whatever, when this could be true or not, its not like this should really be a frequently occurring gossip session. Again, if this is the case, you need to evaluate the HR and hiring managers.If you are trying to be philosophical, the culture of the workplace usually is the greatest (but not the only) factor to drive the work ethic. They work hard you, you work hard - they take 'shortcuts', you take 'shortcuts'. I know that an individual could still have great work ethic in the mist of some lazy people, or a poor work environment, but just don't discount the culture. Also, a manager/worker relationship is different from a worker/worker relationship, so the you could have one side thinking you are a hard worker, but behind closed doors you are in cahoots with others to have the most mediocre take on your job. Part of it is that we both get in around 9, whereas everyone else rolls up here at 5-6am. There's one guy that I swear does 3 lines of coke at 4am as soon as he gets here and is amped until he leaves at lunchtime. This is what you get when you allow such a flexible work schedule.

i think that is still true but a new trend i have seen is that it looks bad if you aren't sending emails at ridiculous hours of the morningi work 9-5...but usually dart out around 4:30 or 4:45, because I know I will spend an hour or two doing email during the evenings[Edited on August 17, 2011 at 11:46 AM. I enjoy working at a place where the random "late" or "early" hours I send emails and the appearance of how late I stay in the office don't mean much so I don't have to worry about it. I work hard everyday and go beyond my job description with what I do and how I do it and don't worry about the when - besides actually making deadlines. (I guess part of it has to do with a boss who is very down-to-earth and has opinions about work that line up with mine).The way I view it, half the time people are working "late" or "early" it is due to the fact they didn't get stuff done on time or correct in the first place or if they are just doing it for appearances, it doesn't look any better to me to do the same amount of work in more time as I did in less time.
