Who the hell came up with this?My family has been here since Tennessee was a part of NC. The first time I heard this was on a trip to Hershey, PA, where some PA douche at a Dairy Queen heard my dad's accent and asked where he was from. When my dad said "North Carolina", the PA guy goes "North Cackalacky!" and my dad immediately thought he was making fun of him and didn't respond. That was the first time I heard anyone say that. Is this some sort of faux-folksy thing that Yankees that moved here came up with? Is it specific to a certain part of NC? It's sure as hell not something from the mountains.

People here called NC Cackalacky for several months in 2001.I was not aware that it was still done.

The same people came up with "Cackalacky" for North Carolina as "G-Vegas" for GreenvilleThey have since died of the plague

what an odd thing to be mad about

Hey, groups don't like it when outside groups try to impose anything on them.I'm just trying to see if it is, in fact, native to some other part of NC.It's about as annoying as when the Man Vs. Food guy came to Raleigh and dressed up in NC State, Duke, and UNC gear together. Get that shit out of here. And I still regard anyone who lives in NC but feels the need to hold on to their Red Wings or Penguins fandom as an interloper (hey, at least I'm not like my dad, who wants the News and Observer to put all hockey news in a separate sports section so he doesn't have to see it mixed with his football and racing news).[Edited on August 17, 2011 at 12:18 PM. i went to the museum of modern art with my parents one time, and when we were pulling into the garage the attendant saw the nc state front plate and said "hey, no one from cackalacky allowed", but he was joking and we all had a good smile about it. you're just being a jerk about it.

what's worse is when people refer to the state as CarolinaI watched The Dilemma the other night (starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James) and when they are at the Chicago Blackhawks game, the announcer mentions winning a trip to the 2011 All Star Game in CAROLINAIT WAS IN NORTH CAROLINA, DAMMIT
8/17/2011 12:47:16 PM
yeah, but they're not the north carolina hurricanes

the name of the team is one thing...the location is another. I never hear people on TV talking about playing the Carolina Panthers in Carolina.

My NC History teacher in middle school (Mr. Tharpe...Daniels Middle what what) used to say "Norf Cackalacky"

I'm generally not a fan. It's overly familiar and kinda diminutive. It's like if you introduce yourself to someone as "John," and they're like, "Oh, what's up, Jonalonadingdong?!?!"[Edited on August 17, 2011 at 3:33 PM. Reason : sss]

when was your trip to Pennsylvania P&B?cause if this is some new term to youyou must have been living under a rock

I thought black folk came up with this stupid shit.
8/17/2011 3:56:15 PM
I think George Washington Carver first coined the term
8/17/2011 4:00:22 PM
I thought it came about with the troops being trained at Fort Bragg during the Vietnam War...meaning it was probably slang, not intended to be negative, and made up by carpetbaggers

I just figured the Steelers were the new Cowboys anyway. People like the team's image and decide to claim that they've always been fans, no matter where they're from.

I recall my dad using this phrase in the early 80's and I know his mom used the term. I do not know who taught it to whom.my family has been here since we moved from virginia in 1740something.
8/17/2011 5:00:44 PM
i personally hate this term and throw sand in the eyes of anyone who says it
8/17/2011 10:24:10 PM
I have heard/used this phrase since.... well, I can't even really pinpoint a time it's been that long(I'm from the Morehead City/Havelock area)
