Saw these in Durham the other day. Looked like a goldfinch but without the white stripes:They were hopping around on the ground looking like they were doing a drunk dance.

Titmouse?

Hmm, nope, a bit bigger and had a solid yellow chest and solid black cheeks.

after searching a couple minutes on google it appears to be an american goldfinch

I killed it with raid. I kinda feel bad, but I don't need my dogs getting bit by something like this. They come back with enough bull rings ( beatles will bite their nose and the dogs will decapitate them by licking. quite intriguing but a PITA to remove).

I'm starting to think goldfinch too but these guys didn't have the white stripes like all the ones in the pictures. Maybe they're a mutant breed!

Yellow tailed Oriole

It actually did look a lot like that but with a shorter tail and smaller. And we're not in Central America

Black and yellow warbler??
8/29/2011 9:59:32 AM
Hmm, no the black was much more clearly defined. I'm thinking they must have been goldfinches that just didn't have clear white lines.[Edited on August 29, 2011 at 10:01 AM. Reason : d]

8/29/2011 10:21:32 AM
Yeah these guys are too small and the markings not the same.I had no idea there were so many black and yellow birds in the southern US
8/29/2011 10:24:53 AM
It's a Carolina Canary
8/29/2011 10:32:22 AM
wait, which bird now?
8/29/2011 10:33:44 AM
Well, it is also notoriously difficult to identify a bird after the fact. I have a great field guide I cant access right now called all the birds of north america. You should check it out, its pretty easy to use in the field or later.
