they do it because impatient dickheads always jump over to the far lane to try and get up front, causing an inevitable logjam. Taking away that far lane makes them stay in their place.

I thought federal law made it so you can't put tolls on already existing highway. Or am I completely imagining that?

I-40 before 70 is two lanes. I-40 just before and just after 70 is three lanes.I-40 after 70 is two lanes. I-40 at business 70 is three lanes. What they need to do is add a two middle lanes from 70 business to just past 70. In the morning the lanes should be open to west bound traffic only. I drive this section of highway every morning entering I40 from the 70 Bypass. This morning at the time I normally go through there, the traffic was cleared rather than the normal 10 minute delay between 70 Bypass and White Oak Rd. Bridge. I'd say it worked.They pinched the on ramp from the Bypass to 1 lane (forcing the merge 1/2 mi prior to the ramp). They also closed the "fast" lane of I40 causing a shift/merge prior to the on ramp. This eliminated the assholes that jump into the far right lane to fuck up the merging traffic.Essentially, they created 2 merging situations farther apart rather than one heinous one.[Edited on September 21, 2011 at 1:50 PM. It caused me no issues on my way home from work in Smithfield, besides the dumbass that waited until he almost hit the traffic barrel before finally moving over, driving 10 under the speed limit

Maybe they can fix the Durham Freeway South merge onto I-40 East. That sucks. Bastards constantly pass you on the right lane knowing damn well that the right lane ends in 1000 feet and then expect to be let in slowing everyone down. If the jackass would just get in line with everyone else 2 miles back all would be smooth. Fuck the merge lane.
