I loved/hated that game.

Protip: Sirrus and Achenar are both honest and lying simultaneously.

Myst is essentially a giant powerpoint display, (apple hypercard, actually) It's a combination of simple minigames and video cutscenes(prerendered and heavily compressed) played in quicktime. It was mostly limited by the read speed of the CD-ROM drive. It looked fantastic, but anyone who played it at the time knew it was nothing compared to the true complexity of 3d games like Doom.[Edited on October 11, 2011 at 10:17 PM. Reason : .]

I got bored just looking at Myst screenshots, so I never wanted to play the game.I got my adventure games from Lucasarts. Monkey Island, Full Throtle, Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango, Loom, etc.
10/11/2011 10:31:19 PM
I read "Day of the Tentacle" as Day of the Testicle and was wondering wtf kind of kids' game is that
10/11/2011 10:33:00 PM
The Polecats are in trouble!
10/11/2011 10:33:14 PM
its amazing considering that OP's photo was considered "high res" back in the day.
10/11/2011 10:33:48 PM
It was rendered on Mac Quadras, probably cost a small fortune.
10/11/2011 10:36:38 PM
Circa 2000

Myst is not an engine, it's a series of video clips and images.[Edited on October 11, 2011 at 11:11 PM. Reason : apples to oranges, yes]
10/11/2011 11:10:04 PM
All I remember is I got Doom to work on my computer but Myst never would.
10/11/2011 11:30:36 PM
The 7th Guest was another pre-rendered game that I always enjoyed playing. I never had a copy of Myst to play...
10/12/2011 4:11:45 AM
The real myst looks pretty damn good for a 2000 game.
10/12/2011 4:27:15 AM
Especially by comparison:

Don't get stuck in Dunny, y'all.
10/12/2011 12:00:07 PM
God, I played the shit out of that game, and Riven
10/12/2011 12:04:35 PM
I remember Riven was one of the first games to bring my in-game progress to a dead halt. Some of the "puzzles" were a bit on the ludicrous side, I recall.
10/12/2011 12:11:51 PM
yeah<--- this person used the cheat codes the whole way through, after dealing with Myst, I knew following a step through guide was gonna take LONG enough, but I remember being relatively impressed with the graphics and story for a while... then puberty hit and I never played another computer game again ever. hahahahahhaha

I would also like to add two series very near to my heart: Gabriel Knight, and Police Quest.
10/12/2011 7:21:55 PM
police quest! yes! I was trying so hard to remember the name of that game.I never knew wtf was going on in Myst but I was very young. Commanche 3D, Shadowgate and Mechwarrior were great[Edited on October 12, 2011 at 8:08 PM. Reason : F-117A Nighthawk (would love to download this if possible ]

10/12/2011 8:32:55 PM
http://btjunkie.org/search?q=full+throttleyou may or may not want to scroll on past "full throttle anal," but after this step im assuming you know how to play old DOS games on windows?
10/12/2011 8:34:56 PM
Problem with older games is they don't always play nice with new os systems. I ran into that when trying to install an older version of Sim City.[Edited on October 12, 2011 at 8:37 PM. Reason : T]

Myst for iPhone looks awesome. Almost a gig though.
10/12/2011 8:44:22 PM
try http://www.gog.com, or http://www.direct2drive.com.Or maybe download the Steam client. GoG has an awesome selection of classics though, and there's no DRM or anything stopping you from distributing your purchase as you wish.[Edited on October 12, 2011 at 9:26 PM. Reason : punctuation]
