bradford pears smell nasty, yes. but they don't flower now.i haven't been on campus in years, so i'm trying to remember if the trees i described are even outside that building.

Not sure of what tree/shrub that is. But I remember Bryce Lane (hort prof) telling a story about how those are pruned at the base to give them the tree-form. It's a shrub of some sort.

Those things do smell terrible. Cloyingly sweet, unpleasant fragrance. Not as bad as a bradford pear but not good.And, yes, they are basically really huge shrubs. I thought they were kind of holly-like but I wasn't really sure. Had to walk past those suckers just about every day when I worked in that building.

Looks more like Osmanthus fortunei than fragrans. fortunei is planted all over campus.
