Armed robbery took place off-campus and the pursuit spilled onto North Campus just outside of Winston and Caldwell Hall. I was in the building and we saw the chase pass us through the window. Guy robbed Wells Fargo and tried to get away. Currently the area between Caldwell and Winston is being processed as a crime scene, but the all clear has gone off.[Edited on October 28, 2011 at 11:13 AM. Reason : f]

THIS IS A ARNED ROBBERY!
10/28/2011 11:16:55 AM
i like how tww had me up to date on the news faster than the ncsu texting serviceps why do they still text me i need to fix that
10/28/2011 11:17:59 AM
I laughed heartily at that photo/caption.Well played.
10/28/2011 11:18:34 AM
damn i didn't get any texts
10/28/2011 11:18:53 AM
I just got a text. 11:20. More than 20 minutes after the alarms went off. facepalm.
10/28/2011 11:21:13 AM
That photo/caption gets me every time.
10/28/2011 11:21:53 AM
The wolfalert system is a good idea, but by the time you get the text the emergency is over
10/28/2011 11:22:01 AM
So this raises some serious issues.I was literally right next to it happening, the cops were outside our door with the suspect, and yet we can't hear the alert broadcast on campus because there's not enough speakers. I mean really, in the Court of Carolina right at edge of the building with big bay windows, you should be able to hear the emergency speakers.
10/28/2011 11:25:28 AM
I guess in some situations the event would last longer than it takes to get a text out... gunman on campus, train derailment, something like that...
10/28/2011 11:25:40 AM
I could hear the chimes from my bed in my apartment.Which means two things: They are loud and have some serious range, and I'm still in bed.[Edited on October 28, 2011 at 11:27 AM. Reason : serious range at least projecting SOUTH of campus]

good work TWW. You served your country proud.
10/28/2011 11:29:41 AM
Ontop actually led me to believe it spilled onto the rooftops. That's just what this campus needs: some intense firefights taking place on the roofs above students' heads. And somehow, the Technician would still make it uninteresting to read about.

Heard the alarms in my office on Centennial. We were casually interested.
10/28/2011 11:33:52 AM
^^^Granted, considering I opened the door to listen, shrugged, and then got on TWW to see what's up.TWW does it again!
10/28/2011 11:35:02 AM
Couldnt hear the text from Bostion, just the chimes. Sad considering the nearest speakers are DH Hill less than a par 3 away.
10/28/2011 11:36:58 AM
I live on Western near the Goat and could hear the chimes and understand the message after I opened a window. I'm surprised people had trouble hearing it on campus.
10/28/2011 11:39:47 AM
wral said they got the guy now
10/28/2011 11:41:23 AM
Needing classes to open doors/windows to hear isn't the best way to communicate that there is a gunman trying to get into classrooms.
10/28/2011 11:41:51 AM
^ yeah, but I'm like a mile away. I'm not even on campus. I wouldn't expect to be able to hear it clearly here.

jesus christ, how many times has that bank location been robbed? I feel like that is the 3rd one in less than 2 yearscheck that- it was Capital Bank, not the wells fargo/wachovia on hillsborough.[Edited on October 28, 2011 at 11:46 AM. Reason : wral informs!]
10/28/2011 11:45:12 AM
^^Well no one in Winston, Caldwell, or Thompkins could hear what he was saying, and we can't open windows in these buildings (they're WELDED SHUT, this was done last year when an HVAC was installed? the professors are super paranoid about it).Honestly it scares the shit out of me that you can't open any of the windows without breaking them.CORRECTION: Bank robbery was in Cameron Village, and the chase ENDED here. Shit.
10/28/2011 11:47:05 AM
I'm not denying the problem - just saying they have some shit tweaked wrong if I can hear it at home but y'all can't hear it on campus.
10/28/2011 11:48:17 AM
I guess they could be more concerned about the large population areas? I don't know. But I honestly don't see why it's not feasible or even that expensive to put a speaker in every building. That's not the area to be cheap on, I mean fucking really.
10/28/2011 11:54:41 AM
Are they worried about the emergency broadcast being too loud or what? The elderly will complain!
10/28/2011 11:55:15 AM
I remember when I was a student at NC State I use to get the text alerts whenever someone reported a 'suspicious person' within a certain area around campus. Now it takes 20 minutes to let the students know there is someone with a gun running towards campus?
10/28/2011 11:55:17 AM
10/28/2011 11:56:51 AM
The paradox of this is that people who live far from campus can hear it clearly, but when I walk out of my office I can actually see the speakers on top of Poe and still not understand a damn thing. Acoustics fail.
10/28/2011 11:57:26 AM
You'd think they'd say something when a bank robbery was in progress at Cameron Village, not only once it got ON campus.Though to be fair the sirens started almost immediately after the guy got on Hillsborought St. and out of his car.
10/28/2011 11:57:56 AM
There are people with firearms on campus everyday. Some are criminals. Some are made to be criminals due to asinine carry laws (aka the government creates criminals due to the otherwise lawful actions being made illegal for no reason but unfounded rhetoric). Some are government employees.
10/28/2011 11:59:23 AM
Sure. Why wouldn't we want to turn this into a thread on gun control.
10/28/2011 12:04:19 PM
I agree with Netstorm on two things:1) When it comes to budgeting, security of the students shouldn't be an item on the chopping block.2) Welding the windows in the CHASS Halls is one of the most abhorrent things I've seen.
10/28/2011 12:04:30 PM
Heard this inside my office near the state fairgrounds, where were these sirens when our complex was locked down due to an armed robber running right outside my office. Instead I get alerted that CV has been robbed...
10/28/2011 12:59:12 PM
never knew I could hear the sirens at trailwood/tryon until this morning, but the problem with the system is I didn't even get an e-mail, nor could I find any info on the home page of ncsu.edu until after the all clear happened. makes sense.
10/28/2011 1:18:08 PM
wdprice is right. Hopefully Students for Concealed Carry can make use of this and the other armed robberies on/close to campus in the last two or three weeks and score some new recruits!
10/28/2011 1:18:42 PM
Heard nothing at the Vet School. But then again, my office is in the deepest part of the lower level (on the other side of my wall is a mechanical room, then unexcavated earth) so if I *did* hear something it would have to be hellishly loud.
10/28/2011 1:23:00 PM
you mean, you herd nothing at the vet school?heck heck heck
