I fucking HATE watching television with old people
11/26/2011 10:31:08 AM
Amen.Old people also don't give a fuck about resolution. My MIL thinks everything looks better at low res because the icons on the screen are bigger.
11/26/2011 10:32:11 AM
I still love these old peopleBUT I CRINGE AT THEIR TELEVISION SETTINGS[Edited on November 26, 2011 at 10:34 AM. Reason : ERRBODY'S SHORT AND FAT, GRANDMA]
11/26/2011 10:33:31 AM
just grab the remote and change the settings.that's what i do.
11/26/2011 10:38:24 AM
Old people+technology=
11/26/2011 10:40:29 AM
hahaha indeed
11/26/2011 10:40:32 AM
Not my grandfather. We stayed at their house for Thanksgiving, and I am currently watching on a 37" 1080p TV. He also has three 21-23" widescreen monitors on his computers in his two offices, and another TV/Monitor that is widescreen. Plus he has a half dozen PCs.
11/26/2011 10:44:24 AM
My parents are this way. I fix the AR every time I'm home. Technology is just too much. I don't even own a big, new TV. My parents have had one for a few years and I still know how to operate it better than them.
11/26/2011 10:50:04 AM
bb, but then old people start complaining about THOSE AWFUL BLACK BARS or EVERYTHING LOOKS STRANGE (normal)
11/26/2011 11:14:15 AM
My mom HATES the black bars lol
11/26/2011 11:20:32 AM
Old folks are like, if AR=5.9 is good enough for the Mustang, it's good enough for me, dammit!
11/26/2011 11:40:46 AM
forget old people, many girls in general will sit there at an HDTV watching the grainy, shitty channels. "but i can't tell the difference!"
11/26/2011 11:43:46 AM
Both my father and father-in-law did not even know they had HD channels. So in both cases I waited to show them their error during NFL coverage. "How did I not know about this before?"
11/26/2011 1:19:11 PM
channel 3=/=1105also when I sold TVs for several years, this was the worst conversation (aspect ratio). further, buying a NICE big screen and forgoing any HD cables (even component video) 'cause it will still look better 'than what we already have'composite from your cable box to your TV?? Composite directly INTO your TV (antenna input) yes. Then the 'why do we need a cable box then?' question. I would hate to work at TWC[Edited on November 26, 2011 at 1:32 PM. Reason : twc]
11/26/2011 1:30:03 PM
^^^^ haha, I also first thought of wingspan/chord^^^ yeah, blows my mind
11/26/2011 2:01:24 PM
lol. Funny thread, would read again.
11/26/2011 2:29:10 PM
11/26/2011 2:32:36 PM
can you even still buy SD tvs?
11/26/2011 2:33:44 PM
^We're talking old people here. Some are still sitting on TVs purchased in the 80s. Then there are some that would spend a couple hundred dollars fixing their old SDTV when a new HDTV would only cost a little extra. Bonus points if it's been repaired multiple times.
11/26/2011 2:43:12 PM
My parents use 1024x800 monitor resolution. When I change it they tell me it doesn't look right and they wanted it the way it was.
11/26/2011 2:47:27 PM
While we're on the subject, how about hotels everywhere installing HDTVs in all of their rooms, but still only having basic cable.
11/26/2011 3:00:00 PM
Good. I thought my mom was the only person who did this. They have a theatre room with a 70something inch and she would always watch 5 because its "channel 5" and 11 because its "channel 11"[Edited on November 26, 2011 at 3:12 PM. Reason : then her sister has a big square tv and swears its hd.]
11/26/2011 3:12:01 PM
My dad can't get HD cable and doesn't want a satellite so he watches SD on his 50" LCD. Then, every time I go over there I fix the aspect ratio and he complains and changes it back to "stretch."Every. Time.
11/26/2011 3:27:12 PM
Why would you change it from stretch? Do you like having black bars on the side?
11/26/2011 3:47:21 PM
My girlfriend's friend has her tv on a super high fps. Movie nights over there are painful.
11/26/2011 5:07:02 PM
^^why in the world would you want to watch everything stretched out & fat??? yes, i'll take the black bars please.
11/26/2011 5:08:24 PM
^ this
11/26/2011 7:45:30 PM
Lumex
11/26/2011 7:51:49 PM
My dad was complaining over Thanksgiving that a lot of the video feed for his TV seems to be cut off on the sides.2 minutes later I changed the cable box from "STRETCH" to "NORMAL" and all was good.
11/26/2011 7:54:01 PM
11/26/2011 7:59:04 PM
11/26/2011 10:21:03 PM
People at work with LCD monitors not running their monitor at the native resolution, much less at the same aspect ration drives me fucking crazy.I'm just like "GOD DAMN, INCREASE THE DPI IF YOU CAN'T FUCKING SEE IT ."
11/26/2011 10:33:05 PM
I have resorted to not only increasing the DPI but also using huge default font sizes on some of these smaller high-resolution monitors; once these monitors get the DPI of an iPhone it will be a nightmare.
11/26/2011 10:36:39 PM
11/26/2011 11:15:00 PM
yeah, my parents have a 55" LED TV. My mother watches the HD channels and knows about it, but when I go over there and dad is watching a football game, he has it on CH.31 with blackbars on the side. I turn it to 1500 and he is amazed.
11/26/2011 11:18:00 PM
I love this thread hahaI suck and still have a tube tv but I know about them good channelsONE DAY!
11/26/2011 11:22:53 PM
I also have an old CRT and no cable TVthis is what converter boxes are for
11/27/2011 1:12:17 AM
11/27/2011 1:35:46 AM
how come people want proper aspect ratio and giant-ass true HD setsbut they gladly listen to really poorly ripped digital music files
11/27/2011 1:39:30 AM
11/27/2011 1:40:48 AM
^^do you mean like 96kbps CBR MP3
11/27/2011 1:51:09 AM
I actively seek out 8bit music.
11/27/2011 1:52:58 AM
do you mean stuff like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EAw3CGscwg#t=00m19s
11/27/2011 3:07:24 AM
yes, super high fidelity awesome sound quality to the max!!-from your ipod
11/27/2011 6:58:02 AM
Nothing beats buying a hi def TV and hooking yp your cable box via coax and putting the TV on channel 3
11/27/2011 9:04:31 AM
Greg Fischel in life size 480i FTW
11/27/2011 9:31:22 AM
^^^I'm personally re-ripping my music in 160kbps AAC (or finding rips around 128-192kbps MP3, pref. VBR) because my current high-quality rips (320kbps MP3) fill up my iPod Touch easily.
11/27/2011 9:55:57 AM
iTunes will automatically down convert your music when you sync it into your device, if you select that option.
11/27/2011 9:56:56 AM
yeah but one lossy conversion after another sucks the big oneit's bad enough when all I can find is a WMA rip and then that has to be transcoded, but I avoid that when possible, instead preferring just one encode from some lossless format to the desired bitrate (or trusting whatever rips I find on the Internets)
11/27/2011 10:00:14 AM
set em up
