that they chew with their mouth open and it's obnoxious?my coworker is horrible about it but i feel rude treating her like my niece where i tell her that i can hear her chewing and it's grossing me out.....i'm supposed to go to lunch with her again this weekend and i'm afraid i might throw up
12/5/2011 1:19:07 PM
i usually just tell peopleits not my fault some adults can't act like adultsthe tr00f hurts
12/5/2011 1:20:54 PM
there is no polite way to do that. you should consider trying to grow as a person and put up with small annoyances with more grace and mutual respect.
12/5/2011 1:22:13 PM
^^^ I have that problem in my office, most people bring their lunch and eat at their desk... This guy near me always brings in some kind of smelly soup. He slurps each time he takes a spoonful, I have to leave the room. Also, a different guy, a visiting scientist from Columbia wears sooooo much cologne. I do not want to make him uncomfortable since this was his first experience in America, and it is his work place too. I am hoping someone else will cave first and tell him. After he leaves, you can smell it for another 20 minutes or so, it is really that bad.
12/5/2011 1:23:24 PM
or maybe that person should learn to eat like a civilized adultjust ask them if they would mind eating like a normal person with a closed mouth
12/5/2011 1:23:50 PM
i hung out with an asian chick a while back that did this terribly, and i couldn't deal with itnot just open mouth chewing but horse chomping and talking at the same time

12/5/2011 1:33:05 PM
YOU KNOW YOU BITCHES COULD HAVE PMED ME INSTEAD
12/5/2011 1:33:19 PM
sure, you can bring up somebody's flaws in the guise of helping them avoid further embarassment, but it will probably never provoke that person to think "gee, that was nice."the real question is how rudely you want to go about it. in order of ascending rudeness:you can blame the problem it on yourself as being inproportionately annoyed at small noises (and maybe you are, ha); pull them aside at a quiet moment and tell them what a good friend they are and that's why you are sharing this information; take the passive-aggressive route suggest that someone else eats with their mouth open, which annoys you; or take a poll at a group table to see if other people are also bothered by the behavior while that person is present, or indeed that person's behavior.
12/5/2011 1:33:54 PM
i choke a bitch out from behind when they chomp on their daily carrots with their mouth openthey wake up on the floor 10 minutes later with carrot in their mouth and not really sure what happened
12/5/2011 1:33:55 PM
its really not big of a dealyou either walk up to them or you speak across the officeyou say "yo man chill with the slurping"i dont know, when its all adults that seems to work, you dont need to be big and bad about it, come up with schemes, talk crap behind his back, or really be rude. just tell him to chill when he does it and its bothering you. No reason for you to not be comfortable in the office, we all work hard.[Edited on December 5, 2011 at 1:37 PM. Reason : f]

^ usually I have no problem being straight forward, but I am the new one in the office, and I didn't want to step on toes. The guy who slurps is really really nice and very quiet. Everybody is friends with him. When I talk to him I think 'who cares how he eats?' and then lunch happens... oh godso I just leave and do work elsewhere for an hour
12/5/2011 1:48:18 PM
that makes sense, you just cant be afraid to make an enemy or two for a a weektheyll get over it, yea they might talk behind your back a little, but just dont alienate after you say something
12/5/2011 1:50:30 PM
^ everyone else is either a PhD or Post doc and I feel like I would be burning bridges being the new punk telling everyone how to eat and smell and shit
12/5/2011 2:08:12 PM
Your options are simple, yet widely varied. There's the subtle approach; continually pointing at your own closed mouth as you chew. There's the direct approach; simply tell them to close their mouth. This can be done in a stern or joking fashion. There's the confrontational approach; smack their jaws shut each time they chew with their mouth open. There's the Pavlovian approach; smack them with a rubber band each time they chew with their mouth open. There's the awkwardly aggressively sexual approach; shove something phallic in their mouth when they're chewing. There's the passive aggressive approach; get them a t-shirt of the Sesame Street Martians (wa wa wa wawawawawa) and see if they pick up the hint.I'm sure there are plenty of other options.[Edited on December 5, 2011 at 2:09 PM. Start a conversation, take a bite and pause, chew, swallow, and then say "sorry I don't like to talk with my mouth full" and continue. Hopefully they'll get the hint[Edited on December 5, 2011 at 2:13 PM. Reason : 2. take a video 3. profit?]

chewing with your mouth open makes food taste better.

I, too, sit near a coworker who chews with his mouth open ALL THE DAMN TIME. I just throw on some headphones and crank the music until he's done. Someone told me this is a cultural thing. Supposedly in Asian countries (including India) chewing with your mouth open is a way to show you're enjoying your food. I have no idea if this is true or not.
