Why is it disrespectful to wear a hat in a church. What type of dress hats does this not apply to and why? Where did this originate? We always used to say you have to take your hat off because God cannot see through the building and your hat at the same time so it blocks his view into your brain. Kind of like the adjustment bureau movie.

I never understood this either. Maybe because hats can be dirty??

It originated back when prostitution was legal. Whores were usually pretty ugly, so they wore baseball caps to his their busted grills. However, during fellatio, the bill of the cap would scrape the man's junk and cause abrasions, leading the patrons to ask that hats be banned for the prostitutes. However, due to title IX, the rule had to be for both genders to be legal, so no one could wear hats inside.

The military wear hats because they're required to by their uniform regulations. Civilians do not have any regulations for wearing clothing that can be enforced by the gov't, however it is a traditional/customary sign of respect to remove your hat indoors, when hearing the national anthem, praying, etc. More than likely, it came from days when hats were pretty large (top hats, cowboy hats, etc) and it would be impractical for them to be worn indoors. Also, they would fall off when the head was bowed, so from that it more than likely became custom to remove the hat when bowing the head, such as when praying.

It is from my experience that 60% of the people do not remove their hat during the national anthem anyways...so I just choose to say nothing...most of them still walk around and chit chat during it also.As for military, Raiden nailed it. Its regs, nothing more. Wearing a "cover" indoors is against regs in the Navy, unsure of other branches. The only time you can remained covered while indoors is because of ceremony or you are carrying a weapon or on watch...at least that is how it is in the navy.

same way for the army, with the only exception being a chapel/church - even if you're armed no hats/cover.
