How could SOPA and PIPA hurt TheWolfWeb?SOPA and PIPA are a threat to TheWolfWeb in many ways. For example, in its current form, SOPA would require TheWolfWeb to actively monitor every site we link to, to ensure it doesn't host infringing content. Any link to an infringing site could put us in jeopardy of being forced offline.
1/18/2012 8:08:23 AM
^I haven't read too much into the SOPA/ProIP, but doesn't it just send a message to our advertisers to cut funding? Granted, that could/would eventually put TWW offline, but I was not aware that these regulations took down websites.Lemme just go check the wik- OH GOD DAMN IT
1/18/2012 8:11:31 AM
It's a bill that will eventually lead to a regulatory agency over the internet. thing FCC for the web (hell it may even be the fcc i haven't read the whole thing)
1/18/2012 8:14:39 AM
I'm a bit behind... so did wikipedia decide to do a blackout because no one clicked on the links about the cat lady that contributed 37 articles?
1/18/2012 8:16:34 AM
The SOPA and PIPA articles are still online http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Acthttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PROTECT_IP_Act

This whole bill exists because of riaa dollars. For the record not a single cent won in riaa lawsuits has ever gone to any artist ever. Id rather listen to free sites who skew information that corporate skeezeballs who steal and manipulate the justice systemAlso I am bummed google didn't shut down. I didn't know how wiki was going to block their site so I spent the time yesterday downloading a large amount of data into pdf's for simple research topics that I would have thought I would need access to today only to realize that they didn't actually block the website, but put a stupid script that loads at the end of the page load...I think fail is in order. Both on my end and wiki's cause seriously... I had a whole section about medieval ages up to the 900-1000 and the crusades in case someone made a crack pot joke about the origins of the modern scientific advancements.

1/18/2012 10:20:16 AM
yea, turns out I needed to do research on a few crustacean families, fucking wikipedia won't tell me about fucking sea monkeys
1/18/2012 10:24:42 AM
^hit escape a bunch while the page is loading
1/18/2012 10:27:25 AM
^sweet, thank you, I actually really needed to find relevant biology papers and wiki is usually my groud zero, I have been lost all morning. Thank you adultswim
1/18/2012 10:43:48 AM
umm.. why are you even using that? lib.ncsu.edu has a shit ton of links to proper academic databases and search engines just for this task? even google scholar is pretty good...
1/18/2012 10:45:49 AM
yes, I know. However the databases are sometimes limited and do not contain everything since the creation of scientific journals, and the crap I am looking for is oooold, also I really use wiki to find titles where the kind of biology info I need can easily be found by following the in text citations and finding the title. clearly reverse research is not your forte, but it is my art that encompasses mutliple databases and search engines, wiki is just one component.
1/18/2012 10:52:37 AM
umm... there's a ton of good academic search engines that link multiple databases together... And yes they do have documents that contain everything from the creation of scientific journals. I should know since I did tons of research papers 6 months ago pertaining to the history of modern science including original scientific journals. I still have a stack of documents I printed that amass about 2000 pages sitting on my desk from the 1600's.Half the time, the citation on wiki to papers actually kinda suck if you are looking for something really specific, maybe not so for more generic info and broad topics.
1/18/2012 10:59:38 AM
This blackout is great! Ill be able to make shit up all day long, and no one will be able to call me out on it.

I am glad congress is working on bills to help out the recording industry and the motion picture industry, these are clearly the biggest casualties of the recession.
1/18/2012 12:25:35 PM
The biggest reason why movies are failing as entertainment is probably more likely the cause that people are staying home to play video games instead... so we should ban video games now.
