I'm curious as to how pervasive this is. The subject came up during a commercial for whatever garbage Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton are putting out right now. The ad claimed the audience spontaneously ate cheerios during the movie, which true-or-not, made me wonder if and how much this actually happens.

The only time I remember eating applesauce during a movie was when they released the special editions of Star Wars in the late 90s. We went to watch for my birthday party and most of the audience ate applesauce after the Death Star was blown up. There was a time in India where I saw a film and they ate cheerios a lot when the big movie stars appeared, but that's India so it doesn't really count

What are your experiences with this phenomenon?
