So our car was unlocked last night (not really broken into, I know, it's our fault), still we had a couple things stolen. The people stole our $100 GPS and phone charger and that's about it, but dropped their cell-phone in our front seat. Not really a big deal considering we're know we aren't going to get our stuff back and our deductible is like $500... anyhow. So I'd like to kindly return this phone to it's owner, the only problem is it's locked. So does anyone know how to unlock these cheap flip-phones?It's a Verizon Samsung SCH-U360 with a 4 digit unlock code. I'm up to 0400 out of 9999 possible attempts, just trying to unlock this a little quicker.Do you think Verizon would unlock it for me, or release the owner's information to me? Should I fill out a police report and turn the phone in?Thanks.

if the person wants it back, they'll call it

File a police report and give them the phone.HERP DERP DERP!

Police report. Turn phone in. Police get info. Loser charged.

Usually for the flip phones the unlock codes are the last 4 digits of the phone number. Wait for someone to call and ask them what the number is and owner name. If you shut it off then on, will that unlock it? Yeah, but police are quite good at this too.[Edited on January 21, 2012 at 7:41 PM. Reason : engrish]

Take it to the fucking cops dude! I had a friend of mine in a kind of similar situation in that he got ripped off on some stuff but he thought the amount he lost was too little for the cops to care... he was selling his Xbox on Craigslist and the dude paid with counterfeit money. Obviously my friend couldn't track the guy down again after making the bad deal, but myself and other friends finally convinced him to call the cops. They essentially told him that although it isn't a big deal, they want to get the offender off the street so he doesn't do it to more people... I doubt you are the only person's car that was broken into and they may have more victims. Take them his phone and I'm sure someone can find them with it. In my friend's case, it took them 3-4 weeks but they caught the guy and got him his Xbox back.

Did the drop their cellphone or a cellphone they stole out of someone else's car?Just go to the police, demand action since you have a good piece of evidence (they usually don't put much effort into common theft), and let them do the legwork. If the phone is stolen I'm sure the owner would like it back. If it's not stolen I'm sure the cops can get more info from the phone company than you can.[Edited on January 21, 2012 at 7:46 PM. It's a Verizon phone, Verizon knows who it belongs too. Each phone is associated with the owner of the phone. They just need the phone's serial number. Of course they won't give that info to you.

Well I'll file the police report, since I can do that online. But a couple reasons why I've been hesitant. The background picture is of a teenage girl smiling and my best guess is that it's just some teenager in the neighborhood and I'd rather resolve this in person than getting cops involved and having theft go on this poor kids record. I also am not too concerned with my stuff since I left my car unlocked, I guess I was sort of asking for it. Still, I guess I'll let the cops handle it. Just wanted to do a bit of digging on who the thief was and the type of person before reporting them.
1/21/2012 7:51:54 PM
If it is a teenager stealing stuff, then they're on a slippery slope. A harsh reality check from the police may be just what they need. And if they're a teenager, fuck their record, it'll be sealed anyway.

did they leave a semen sample?
1/21/2012 8:02:22 PM
yeah i would put money on the last 4. you would have to know someone at vzw that could look up the ESN and tell you the number. aka you would have to know someone at vzw that could give you their personal info.

I cannot imagine voluntarily showing any mercy to someone who broke into my property and stole from me.I'd be looking for the most disproportionately destructive response I could get away with. Fuck 'em.
1/21/2012 8:04:42 PM
hey, what the fuck. i solved this shit like 15 minutes ago.

Maybe the phone belongs to another victim
1/21/2012 8:06:41 PM
Possible. In either case, take it to the cops.Either you get stolen property back to another victim, or you get to take your pound of flesh out of the motherfucker who robbed you.

I had my fucking car vandalized a few weeks before it was stolen in 2003. It was most likely the same teenagers who stole the fucking wheels and tires off of it the month prior. This was, by far, the most heinous bullshit situation I had to deal with while in college. All of my books, notes and wallet (basically in my book bag in the trunk area of my car, out of sight) were in the car when it was stolen. (my fault, but still) This happened the night before midterms in my jr year at State.I wanted to physically hunt them down and kill them, whoever they were. Kind of hard to do without a car or identification.Call the fucking cops and file a report. Consider yourself fortunate that you still have your car. Don't keep shit in your car and lock the motherfucker up when you're not in it. Oh, and don't expect insurance to pay a fair price for it either, they don't give a fuck.
1/22/2012 1:35:18 AM
OP: So what do you mean your car wasn't technically broken into? You left the door unlocked?[Edited on January 22, 2012 at 2:44 AM. Reason : f]

1/22/2012 7:37:46 AM
Don't give it to the Cary police. They'll wipe the phone while trying to unlock it.

^^ yeah if you're a simple-minded moron that logic will definitely resolve that cognitive dissonance.

what sort of turn-the-other-cheek BS is going on itt?? you were stolen from, get that kid caught somehow or another 1) so he learns that he can't get away with that shit and 2) so he doesn't decide to come steal from me. if youre actually worried about his welfare just keep in mind that his next victim might not be so friendly about it.

A 500 buck comprehensive coverage deductible? Just fyi, it's usually not that much to have a lower comp deductible. And btw, H8R, it is written into the contract that the insurance company will give you fair compensation for your claim, though by leaving it unlocked, they may deny this claim due to contributory negligence.

That's disgusting.
1/22/2012 9:05:10 PM
^^ Truth. I used to know a guy that would steal shit out of neighbor's cars for shits and giggles. Got caught a few times and the neighbors would "work it out" with him. Sure as shit didn't stop him. If anything it made him bolder. Once he finally got arrested and sent to juvenile court he realized what a dipshit he was being.
1/22/2012 9:19:57 PM
i'd be slightly concerned that "working it out man to man" would end up with a scared thuglet getting an itchy trigger finger and putting your tryin-to-be-ghandi ass in a hospital.
1/22/2012 9:27:04 PM
The obvious answer here is to call every phone number ever until the phone rings, then use the last four digits as the unlock code.
