Considering getting one. Reliability, models, alternatives?
3/16/2012 12:52:22 AM
Way cheaper to buy 2 liter bottles.
3/16/2012 12:55:11 AM
I do. Very reliable, but don't expect that shit to taste like name brands.

Yeah I'm not looking to use their syrup mixes or anything, mostly just want available soda water and the occasional homemade ginger ale

Jim Cramer and the other financial people who were supporting the stock own them and are now complaining that they broke.

yeah do the math... its $1 per 2 liters... just for the carbonated water.
3/16/2012 7:48:25 AM
bottombaby has one and she says it rocks

i love my soda stream. we use it daily to make your typical soft drinks and drinks flavored with fruit juices. it's nice to just be able to make whatever you want at the time. since you make it 1 liter at the time, you never have drinks that go flat.i really like not hauling in sodas from the grocery store and finding space for them when i buy them in bulk because they're on sale.not to mention, we're not swamping the recycle bin with bottles and cans.i don't know that it is cheaper than just buying whatever soda is on sale, but after the purchase of the machine, the cost is comparable.

So walmart is listing a 15 ct of 1 liter soda for $16.33 ~ $1.08/l.The direct website order for the CO2 refil is $80 for 130L ~$.62/l.Am I missing something? Everyone says its so much cheaper just to buy the soda water separate.

Stop drinking chemicals
3/16/2012 12:06:05 PM
I considered this like a year or so ago, but after reading the reviews on the syrups I wasn't impressed. For the most part I just drink sweet tea these days, 60% less sugar than Mountain Dew and no carbonation.

I have one on my registry. I just want it to be able to make the soda water. I figure if I want some flavor I'll just add a bit of fresh fruit juice and some agave nectar. I want it mainly because of my allergy/histamine issues, at the moment I'm not allowed anything artificial, no dyes, no artificial sweeteners, no artificial or even concentrated flavors. No corn syrup either.
3/16/2012 12:47:12 PM
like agave syrup is so different
3/16/2012 1:04:48 PM
we want one just for the soda water as well. I've used a friends and just mixed it 2/3s soda water and 1/3 whatever juice I wanted and it was pretty good. i dont care to use whatever crappy syrups it comes with.[Edited on March 16, 2012 at 1:11 PM. Reason : ]

Sometimes I just want that nice soda water burn that I get from soft drinks. I don't want the aspartame, sugar, or caffeine that comes with most of them anymore though. I might drink one or two of these a week plus the occasional soda for cocktails and when eating out.[Edited on March 16, 2012 at 2:11 PM. Reason : s]

this is relevant to my interests. I hate drinking plain water. I am a diet soda addict, so I was looking in to these because I want to reduce my intake of artificial sweeteners. I was thinking that I could use lemons/limes/oranges to add a bit of flavor. these machines are just too much money for me.
3/16/2012 2:17:02 PM
^^ same

GreenJay, this is the second thread you have called out my allergies in. If you would like to talk to my doctor or watch me eat some of the offending foods and break out in a rash or puke half the night please feel free to shoot me a pm. Agave syrup does not cause me to have a rash or puke, corn syrup does both.Skack, where can I get Zevia sodas from?[Edited on March 16, 2012 at 2:25 PM. Reason : ,]

^ I know Whole Foods and Earth Fare carry it. It goes on sale very often for $3.99/6-pack. According to their website Kroger carries it as well.http://www.zevia.com/get-zevia
3/16/2012 2:23:27 PM
Sweet! Thanks for the info!
3/16/2012 2:25:59 PM
I did not like the orange or lemon lime zevia. Have 5 of each if you want them.
3/16/2012 2:28:47 PM
I've had a 6 pack of all natural SF root beer made by Blue Sky, was meh, not as good as the A & W tap, then again no canned root beer is.Also have had a few diff all natural energy drinks, pretty bad as far as energy drinks go

2^the reason I want it is because I only drink soda water once in a blue moon. I end up wasting most of a liter bottle because it goes flat. It would be nice to just make it when I want it.
5/21/2012 10:08:41 AM
I thought these machines make one liter at a time though? Wouldn't you run into the same problem if that were the case?
5/21/2012 10:20:54 AM
True, but I want some, have none, remember wanting it next time im at the store, take it home, drink one glass, and then im done. I feel like if i can make it the time i want it id drink more.
5/21/2012 10:25:56 AM
hahaha you want to buy a $90 gadget for your very occasional soda cravingsare you going to store it next to your snow cone machine, margarita blender and quesadilla maker?
5/21/2012 12:40:42 PM
Whoa, whoa, whoa...a home without a quesadilla maker is no home at all!
5/21/2012 12:48:11 PM
I've got a fucking quesadilla makerit is called a panI put it on the stove and BAM!that shit is amazing - and it makes way more than quesadillas
5/21/2012 12:49:18 PM
Now, we don't have a soda stream, but the idea is a little different than useless inventions like quesadilla makers, or snow cone machines, or other gadgets whose jobs really could be performed adequately with other common household items.
5/21/2012 12:58:49 PM
I get that - and I probably would get some good use out of such a deviceelise wanting one seems ludicrous, thoughshe admits she can't even drink 1 liter of sodabut she wants a $100 machine whose only purpose is to make soda 1 liter at a time
5/21/2012 1:14:57 PM
Sam's Club had a demo on Sodastreams last yearshit was disgustingtheir version of regular coke tasted like I was drinking dirty dish water
5/21/2012 1:50:11 PM
I drink SodaStream's version of coke zero on almost a daily basis. And I adore making my own soda w combinations of fruit juice.Their cola based syrups leave a lot to be desired, but their fruity Sprite and Fresca type knock offs are just fine. One reason we have one is that my husband gets best buys employee discount on it and the syrups. Does it use actual carbonation or just uses air to added the bubbles?
5/21/2012 2:53:59 PM
5/21/2012 3:07:11 PM
^^ It uses CO2 cartridges.
