the fuck? making everyone make U-Turns is better than having signals? It's a good thing I wasn't a civil engineer, because I'm totally lost with that one...
12/4/2012 6:57:54 PM
better yet, make it so in order to make a left turn we should be forced to go around a jughandle.
12/4/2012 7:24:50 PM
traffic signals really do screw up traffic horribly; in fact, much of the traffic you see is due to ill signal timing, and really, it's never perfect. add in always increasing loads, and signals get outdated quickly.my biggest concern with any intersection design is storage lane capacity. never enough or way too damn much. I never see it correct.
12/4/2012 7:27:16 PM
I could explain why "Super streets" can work better than standard signal designs if anyone cares to know why.
12/4/2012 7:43:56 PM
Proceed. Please demonstrate with examples from this project.I used to live there and hid in my house in horror between 4:30 and 7:00pm.
12/4/2012 9:38:31 PM
I think the explanation is that it will suck so bad to cross a major roadway that people will avoid it like the plague and keep traffic moving.

can't they just fix the section by crabtree? tired of assholes merging to get onto 440 at the last minute.
12/5/2012 10:06:10 AM
that's the best way to get around the sheep

Don't worry, we'll find a way to fuck things up. Studies show roundabouts reduce traffic accidents and we fucked that up, didn't we?
12/5/2012 11:56:25 AM
pretty much the entire city of New Orleans is like this ... almost impossible to make left turns without a U turn first
12/5/2012 11:58:25 AM
Thats right where my parents house is/where I grew up, and I used to work across glenwood off of Ebeneezer church. Trying to turn right onto glenwood off of brownleigh drive at 5pm was a NIGHTMARE. similar story trying to leave from fred-anderson toyota at that time. The way the traffic flows from the stupid angus barn intersection causes a incessant stream of cars without enough room to merge safely. The only recourse for brownleigh is to leave from the Ebeneezer church side, and use the red light to cross. Once you get past that red light (at carmax), the gaps created by that red light allow people to practice the "superstreet" method fairly well in the section between Ebeneezer and Pinecrest (which has lots of u-turn spots). Without any traffic lights, I cant see it working at all. Another thing to consider is that between Ebeneezer and Pinecrest, there are alot of hills. A couple of the u-turn spots are really dangerous because you cannot see over the hill, so it can be a guessing game. The one that comes to mind is on westbound 70 right after Pinecrest, where people turn around to enter the "lake anne" neighborhood, or on eastbound 70 right before Pinecrest where people turn around to enter "Dunhill Trace" apartments and the "Longlake" neighborhood.IMO, the angus barn intersection is dangerous, and the main cause of the traffic problems between 540 and at least pinecrest rd. past that, its similar to capital blvd where you just get stuck at red light after red light. Getting the light timing correct so that you dont get stuck at every-single-light would be awesome. I commuted from ebenezer to 64 in cary via 70-440 every day for 2 years. I can count the times I made it down glenwood without getting stuck at any lights on 1 hand. It gets worse between 11pm and 6am because the intersections get on weight-sensor mode, where if 1 car pulls up on a side street it changes the lights.

^^ if you're making a left turn after a u-turn, why not just make a right turn

Yea they have a superstreet intersection at 54 & Erwin/Europa. It is easy enough to navigate, and traffic is usually kinda shitty there, but never completely stopped. I don't know WTH is was like before.

Ebenezer used to be a pretty, fun morning drive until they fixed the bridge and took out all of the passing zones
12/5/2012 12:41:54 PM
I used the one on 15-501 in Chapel Hill on a daily basis while working there and as much as I hated it when there was no traffic because the lights had no sensors, it actually worked traffic-wise.
12/5/2012 12:45:27 PM
I hate that one. One of my friends lives off kaplan erwin road pretty close to that intersection and when they first put it in it became a huge pain in the ass because no one knew where they were supposed to go. That was also before they put the merge signs in...oh yeah there were no sensorsI'm Krallum and I approved this message.[Edited on December 5, 2012 at 12:49 PM. Reason : forgot about dat]

^^You know where I worked Imagine going through it EVERY DAY ughhh lol. It was indeed helpful during rush hour, though.
12/5/2012 12:51:28 PM
Coming from which way? From 40 to where you worked is just one right turn. From chapel hill that's a huge pain because you have to merge across like 7 lanesI'm Krallum and I approved this message./]

10 bucks says everyone who has a high enough car (and truck) runs over the median. I see it all the time everywhere else theyve done that shit.
12/6/2012 10:59:57 PM
Why dont they just make it a toll road, everyone seems to avoid 540 where the tolls are.
12/7/2012 12:00:51 AM
After getting stuck on 55 going from Apex toward Holly Springs the other day... I would gladly pay a toll to avoid that mess. You can pay $whatever in tolls or you can go the toll free route, end up spending 5 times or more the amount of time to get where you're going and end up idling out more $ in gas than the toll would have been.I don't see how people that have to take 55 during their commute each day keep from going postal.[/threadjack]

the toll is fucktarded given what we pay in taxes for our roadstaxes or tolls - pick one
12/7/2012 8:52:50 AM
^Even with the taxes the roads are underfunded. It's not enough. The new toll road makes sense for people that drive in that area. Would you rather pay a tiny fee for the toll, or waste your time sitting in traffic, which also hurts your gas mileage and costs you money that way as well?[Edited on December 7, 2012 at 8:55 AM. Reason : speaking in general, not to you ^]
12/7/2012 8:55:23 AM
^ how is it that our roads system is underfunded, despite having such (comparatively) high taxes? how is it that other states manage to survive on lower taxes and tolls or just higher taxes alone? why is NC so bad at managing its transportation funds?or maybe i'm wrong and under some misconceptions...i was under the impression that our transportation taxes are some of the highest in the country, but i could be wrong[Edited on December 7, 2012 at 8:58 AM. 12/7/2012 8:57:40 AM
because we spend money horribly. plan and simple. this shouldn't surprise anyone.
12/7/2012 8:58:38 AM
They raid the funds generated by the gas tax for use on things besides roads/transportation. True story.
12/7/2012 9:02:07 AM
well, yeah...that was my pointi don't hate toll roads because they're toll roads...i hate the fact that we have a toll road and STILL pay a high tax rate to support roadsit doesn't really affect me as i never have cause to drive that way...but i still think it's stupid
12/7/2012 9:02:10 AM
12/7/2012 9:16:46 AM
The state of NC has the 2nd highest mileage of state maintained roads, because well, we do have a lot of roads for a small state, but really because we don't have a county road system. Many states have a county system, including those with more total road mileage overall. It's this huge number of state roads, mismanagement, lack of proper and timely maintenance, and lack of funding in previous years that causes NC roads to lag behind in quality, despite an astronomical gas tax.[Edited on December 7, 2012 at 9:22 AM.
