I have not really been able to check TWW since the end of June because -- and yes, I'm willing to belabor this point -- I live in fucking Africa. So I've missed out on a lot of news. But I did hear through another volunteer, a Duke grad, that "an NC State message board" was incremental in causing some sort of huge scandal at UNC, so if someone could give me a synopsis on that and anything else that's been going on, then, yay. Please don't tell me to use the search feature. Even in the office my internet is only slightly faster than a carrier pigeon.

oh, wasn't this about the classes that never met, and just existed so that the athletes could get As and keep playing?

Something about stealing essays from 11 year olds, word for word.

It was PackPride, and I thought it was happening before your departure. But, in case it wasn't, here is a timeline of events:http://www.newsobserver.com/2012/12/19/2555492/timeline-of-events-in-the-unc.htmlThe timeline is well-constructed, but it glosses over of the contributions of people on the Internet. If I recall correctly, random people online were responsible for identifying the tweets that led to the initial football investigation related to gifts/sports agents. Then, during a tangential court case, Internet nerds drew attention to the obvious plagiarism in one of the papers submitted as evidence by a former UNC-CH player. These actions led to an investigation that revealed widespread fraud for athletes at UNC-CH (grade changes, no-show classes, classes that professors didn't even know they were teaching, etc...). Chapel Hill maintained that it was an academic problem isolated to the Afro-American Studies department that dated back only a few years. Then, people on the Internet found Julius Peppers' terrible transcript that showed the same "problems" have existed at Chapel Hill for at least a decade.UNC-CH has maintained that it's academic fraud, not athletic, because they let some non-athletes take the fraudulent "classes," too. Furthermore, they have completely thrown their Afro-American Studies department under the bus. Their current line is that, back in the day, they told the Afro-American Studies department that certain classes were a problem, and the department apparently didn't do anything about it. So it's the department's fault, and the University has the meeting minutes to prove it! Of course, people who were at the meeting in question have already emerged to say that this isn't true at all.[Edited on January 12, 2013 at 1:04 PM. Reason : ]

Thank you very kindly for explaining it to me. I intend to continue attributing this victory to TWW when talking to the Duke grad, for the greater glory of the wolfweb.

http://www.voodoobatman.comI'm not personally thrilled with the quality of the material but it's a way for me to dump thoughts and observations while simultaneously confirming that I am alive and conveying some basic information to those who are interested.
