Hey, they're having to destroy the Pope's ring too, for reasons I assume relate to divine magic enchantments. I mean, a lot of wedding rings get some divine magic enchantments, but I've got to think the Pope's ring has like epic-level divine magic involved. Can't let that fall into the wrong hands. It must be tossed into the fires of Mount Vesuvius.
