Also thought about posting this in the "And then, things got worse" thread.

I'm writing to my representatives and the White House to ask them not to do this, for what good it's worth.

Thanks for at least trying.

It's a terrible idea.

I didn't watch the execution of Saddam, and I won't watch this. It's barbaric.

If we do this, then we are no better than the leaders that we say we are trying to defeat.

There have been tons of bad ideas from this administration, but this has to be one of the worst.

Although it makes me think of that George Carlin skit. They just need to find a sponsor.

Like, you don't even have to argue about whether the death penalty should exist to oppose it being streamed as a public spectacle.

I don't want my execution live streamed, but I do want a film to be made about my life and tragic death. I want my character played by Kenan Thompson. If this is a buddy film, I want my buddy to be played by NeuseRvrRat. If this is a sexy documentary, I want my throuple partners played by NeuseRvrRat and DeeMarie.

https://alexiscoe.substack.com/p/wordy-wednesdays-george-washington

Quote :
"I keep forgetting not to go to Twitter. Yesterday, this lapse left me defending George Washington’s private sentiments from an arms dealer’s public execution fantasy.

Palmer Luckey, the Anduril co-founder and public-execution enthusiast, wants us to watch people die for our own good. Responding to the planned execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan, Luckey argued that executions should be “public and brutal,” forcing voters to confront the violence committed in their name.

“George Washington thought the same,” Luckey falsely assured his followers, misrepresenting a December 1778 letter to Joseph Reed, Pennsylvania’s chief executive, in which Washington raged at “Monopolizers—forestallers—& Engrossers” who enriched themselves while his officers could scarcely afford to remain in service.

Washington said who he wanted hanged. He did not say that watching would make voters restrain their government, or that enjoying it would be good for them. Luckey supplied those arguments, then recruited the very dead, foundingist founding father to agree.

“I would to God,” Washington wrote, “that one of the most attrocious in each State was hung in Gibbets, up on a gallows five times as high as the one prepared by Haman.”
“I would to God” is a wish, not an execution order, which would have put Abigail Adams, who sold imported goods and speculated in public debt, in peril. Convert Washington’s fury into a sentencing formula, define “profiteer” loosely enough, and the second lady is dangling from an exceptionally tall gallows for selling pins.

Following Washington’s actual orders would be unfortunate news for Pete Hegseth. In 1756, the General ordered twenty-five lashes for soldiers who swore, “without a Court Martial.” Last year, Hegseth declared there would be “no more woke bullshit” at the Army War College.

Are we restoring eighteenth-century punishments, or does historical authority expire somewhere between another man’s neck and the secretary’s back?

"
