Anybody's plans get fucked over due to the volcanic activity in Iceland? I was supposed to go on a school trip to London, Paris, and Barcelona.... but that was canceled. My flight was from Logan (Boston) to Charles de Gaulle (France) and connect to London, but clearly the volcano under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier thought otherwise.

Its a bit of an overreaction considering how much area the ash actually covers and how easily it could be flown around. I know, I know, its still a dynamicly changing situation and its better safe than sorry but thats why you have people who get paid to monitor this kind of thing around the clock.
4/16/2010 6:52:36 PM
my favorite part of the story was about the volcanos
4/16/2010 6:54:26 PM
You could say it's an overreaction, until you sucked volcanic ash into your engines and had to ditch in the Atlantic Ocean that is.... ]
4/16/2010 6:54:31 PM
The problem with this ash is that it contains glass fragments.NOT COOL.
4/16/2010 6:56:19 PM
Its not like the volcanic ash is invisible and untrackable.^any ash will become glass inside a jet engine[Edited on April 16, 2010 at 6:56 PM. Reason : moot point]

The dean of students at my school was originally an earth science teacher... we had a Europe trip meeting today and she blurted out "That's so cool!" (she immediately received 29 death stares)[Edited on April 16, 2010 at 6:58 PM. Reason : I'm.... dumb.]

You tend to play it safe when you have 100+ lives in your hands over the Atlantic Ocean....
4/16/2010 6:57:35 PM
the bands aren't very thick (although they've spread out more now) and they are quite detectable by reflectivity and absorption. Even with IR.[Edited on April 16, 2010 at 7:02 PM. Reason : pic]

Oh snap!My wife was supposed to come back today (Friday) early morning, but that was cancelled on Wednesday and rescheduled 48 hours back to arrive on Sunday morning.Just received an email now saying the new Sunday morning arrival flight has been cancelled as well and rescheduled another 72 hours back (arriving Wednesday morning).Dammit!
4/16/2010 7:02:10 PM
Personally I'd rather delay my trip than risk spending it in the Atlantic Ocean.
4/16/2010 7:08:28 PM
many of these flights could bypass it to the south (africish) then fly north into europe over the med sea[Edited on April 16, 2010 at 7:13 PM. Reason : obviously areas directly under or near ash are a no go][Edited on April 16, 2010 at 7:13 PM. Reason : point is its not like planes will forget where the ash is and fly into it.]
4/16/2010 7:12:46 PM
Because there are no flights down there at all that have priority for air space. But then again this is troll world so planes can just fly wherever they want no problem
4/16/2010 7:15:15 PM
Planes have a memory ITT son.
4/16/2010 7:16:45 PM
theres so many planes flying over the desert[Edited on April 16, 2010 at 7:25 PM. Reason : do you realize how SMALL planes are?]

No, no I don't. Please enlighten me my son!

ASH CLOUD TRACKER, ENGAGE:
4/16/2010 8:46:17 PM
Don't bring that fuel argument. Domestic european flights nowhere near the ash have been cancelled.

4/17/2010 3:02:25 AM
My understanding is that the ash is only from about FL200-350. I wonder how long you have to fly in it to cause any problem.Airliners can easily fly over this...I wonder if it would cause any problem at all to descend through it rapidly with the engines at idle to keep EGTs way down...of course, most of the passengers would probably completely freak out, even though it wouldn't be dangerous at all (dynamically). That, and if anything did happen, that airline would be out of business.I'm just saying, my shooting-from-the-hip guess is that this could be overcome (for instance, if somebody really did have a significant need to fly).
4/17/2010 6:58:48 AM
^ Apparently it's bad enough for all the aeromed evacs from the AOR to be diverted to Andrews instead of Germany. This is what the ash did to a F-18. http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2010/04/16/340727/pictures-finnish-f-18-engine-check-reveals-effects-of-volcanic.htmlPretty much it'll cause any a/c passing through the ash cloud to immediately FOD out and damage the hell out the turbines.
4/17/2010 7:05:06 AM
Hmmm, yeah maybe I'm wrong...although I seriously doubt they did what I'm describing--a steep, idle/boards descent to minimize time in it and minimize engine temps (to hopefully keep the ash from turning to glass)and then, fuel permitting, there's the option of just flying below it while in the affected area.
4/17/2010 7:08:58 AM
I just feel sorry for the guys whose tours are up right now.So, your return is going to be delayed because we had to close Manas for a little bit.Oh hey Manas is back open, you can go home now!Oh sorry, Volcano.

they took the easy way out by just cancelling everything to save thier asses. In the press conference the dude was like "we dont know if this is an underreaction, overreaction or the right reaction"
4/17/2010 11:13:58 AM
So you would rather they let some flights fly and if something terrible happens then what? OF COURSE THEY ARE GOING TO SAVE THEIR ASSES, BECAUSE EVEN IF ONE PLANE CRASHED, EVERYBODY WILL CRUCIFY THEIR ASSES.Jesus you are acting like a moron. If you are so good at this, go work as an airline safety consultant... not only will you be more famous on tww if you did, but you would also rake in millions.
4/17/2010 11:40:54 AM
I'm especially pissed at the randomness of this whole thing... I would understand something boring like a terrorist attack, but God really had to go all out on this one with a friggin' volcano.
4/17/2010 1:31:54 PM
Should of purchased some Volcano Insurance.
4/17/2010 6:16:24 PM
last time it erupted for two years... they are gonna have to work around it somehow if it keeps up for two years this time... which isn't a crazy assumption...
4/17/2010 6:31:57 PM
^bye bye global economy

^^ kill yourself.Personally I wouldn't mind another year without a summer. You know, minus the famines and what not.
4/17/2010 6:46:10 PM
yea and if it keeps erupting it could make a dent in global warming.. /soapbox

Do you not understand the domino effect a 2 year shut down of european airspace would have? airlines are already losing 400 million per day.
4/18/2010 12:36:41 AM
Do you not understand they'd lose even more if they lost a plane because of the ash?
4/18/2010 12:41:20 AM
what does that have to do with the global economy being fucked because of this?
4/18/2010 12:49:11 AM

As for flights from the U.S. are concerned, flights could be routed through northern Africa and then to Europe...
